Karrick, McMillin, Billings, Ebert, and Wilson Shine at Central Missouri Speedway!

May 2, 2015

(Warrensburg, MO) The Warrensburg area finally caught a reprieve from Mother Nature Saturday night and Central Missouri Speedway roared back to life with a total of 85 drivers on hand. The race program consisted of USRA Modifieds, Street Stocks, Lightning Sprints, B-Mods, and Pure Stocks on Cliff Harris Warrensburg Ford, Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Ram night at the races.

The night featured a total of 18 events, which wrapped up just after 10 p.m.  When all was said and done, Tim Karrick claimed his second-consecutive USRA Modified main event. James McMillin drove to the win in Street Stocks. Mark Billings flew the checkers in Lightning Sprint action, Jacob Ebert grabbed his second win in a row in B-Mods and Jeremiah Wilson also pulled a repeat win in Pure Stocks.

Pure Stock heat wins went to Jason Ryun of Kansas City over Leroy Morrison and Jason Ballard in heat one while Jeremiah Wilson of Concordia claimed heat two ahead of Jason Cochran and Donald Johnson. Ryun and Wilson started the 10-lap main event from row one with Ryun grabbing the early race lead. Wilson fought back and gained the lead by lap two and by lap six the race leaders encountered lapped traffic just as the caution flew.

For the restart, Wilson and Ryun renewed their close battle at the front of the field with Morrison, Johnson, and Cochran inside the top five. Late in the event Cochran and Johnson tangled in turn four to draw one more caution. Ryun shot out front but Wilson moved back out front with a strong run off turn two and went on to record his second win of the year. Ryun crossed the line second followed by Morrison, Johnson, while Jason Ballard rounded out the top five.

Another strong field of B-mod drivers was on hand Saturday evening as four heat races were ran. Jacob Ebert took heat one ahead of Cody Brill, Cody Frazon of LaMonte captured heat two over Nic Bennett, Don Marrs claimed the win in heat three ahead of Johnny McGinnis while Darren Phillips ran a strong race to claim the win in heat four over Olen Stephens of Warrensburg.

Ebert and Frazon started the 15-lap main event on row one but in the blink of an eye Frazon’s hopes of claiming the win were dashed when he lost a left-front wheel while battling Ebert down the front stretch. After a brief caution the race resumed with Ebert leading.

Meanwhile, twenty-third starting Troy Carlyle of Kearney, Missouri began making his way to the front and by the mid-point of the race had made his way into the top ten. Up front Ebert, Mars, and Phillips held down first, second, and third. Another caution flew before lap five to regroup the field once again. Ebert then led Dean Wille, Nic Bennett and Marrs as the laps continued to wind down.

Ebert ran comfortably up front just past midway when Wille’s night came to an end with mechanical woes in turn four. By now, Carlyle was knocking on the door of the top five running with Brill, Bennett and a hard-charging Richard Brainard. By race end Carlyle had climbed all the way to second as Ebert captured his second-consecutive win. Brill ran strong in third position followed by a solid performance by Bennett while Brainard brought his car home in fifth. Next Saturday, May 9, B-Mod action will run under the USRA banner for national USRA B-Mod points.

Tony Layne looked strong all night long and captured the lone Lightning Sprint heat ahead of Mark Billings, Beau Heavelow, and Bobby Layne as these four drivers then made up the first two rows of the 15-lap main event.

Billings and Layne quickly shot to the front to set a blistering race pace as the lightning sprints aptly lived up to their name with a lightning quick main event. Billings ran solidly up front but Layne never was too far behind to try and challenge for the lead. Just as the two leaders ran close, so too did Heavelow and Layne in third and fourth.

On several occasions Layne drew close to Billings as the pair ran as low as they could on the track stalking the corners like a bottom-dwelling catfish. Billings turned back all challenges on this night as Layne settled for second behind Billings who took the win. Heavelow ran third with Layne in fourth and Paden Moreland finished out the top five.

The last few weeks out Brett Wood had things well under control for the Street Stocks but with 20 drivers on hand to challenge him. Wood took the win in the first heat over James McMillin while Clayton Campbell took heat number two over Ron Livengood. Bryce McMillin claimed the third and final heat over Jay Prevete of Windsor.

The main event had the makings of a classic with Wood and Campbell of Otterville starting in row one just in front of the father and son tandem of Bryce and James McMillin. Wood shot out to an early race lead with Bryce McMillin close behind with Campbell and James McMillin not far behind.

With no change in the running order through lap five, Bryce McMillin reeled in Wood and was able to make the pass on him in lapped traffic as the leaders took evasive action to avoid a collision on the front stretch. Bryce McMillin captured the lead from Wood but Wood stayed glued right on the back of McMillin in second. Prevete and Kevin Perkins ran inside the top five as they watched the two leaders set the pace.

By lap twelve Wood had momentum in turn three and went to the extreme low side to retake the lead on McMillin, unfortunately shortly after the pass the pair tangled in turn three with Bryce McMillin receiving the black flag and DQ for the night after the incident that sent both cars looping around.

For the final restart, James McMillin of Warrensburg inherited the lead as he saw his son retire to the pits. Prevete moved into second with Perkins third and Campbell fourth by lap 12. For the final three laps McMillin was never seriously challenged and went on to victory lane. Perkins put together two strong final laps to move into second at the line with Prevete coming away in third, Campbell fourth, and Ron Livengood of Sedalia fifth.

Last to compete for the night was the USRA Modified division with 24 cars on hand. A pair of Kansans dominated heat one as John Allen beat Justin Johnson to the line for the win. Heat two went to Robbie Test of Jefferson City over Shad Badder. Tim Karrick of Basehor, Kansas claimed heat three over Jim Moody, who finally seemed to turn his luck around.

John Allen and Robbie Test earned the front row starting positions by accumulating the most passing points in the preliminary heat races. Karrick and Johnson started in row two with Badder and Moody side-by-side in row three once the 25-lap main event went green. Test and Karrick had a classic battle swapping the lead a few times within the first five laps until Karrick found his preferred line to take sole possession of the lead with Test dropping back to second.

A yellow flag flew for a slowing Lewis Jackson on lap seven as the field regrouped for the restart. Karrick then led Badder, Test, Moody, Allen, and Terry Schultz inside the top five. By lap eight, Badder was doing everything he could to challenge Karrick but Karrick began pulling away until another caution a few laps later waived over the filed.

For the lap 9 restart Karrick led Badder, Moody, Schultz, Allen, and Test. Brian Johnson and Gunner Martin got together in turn four to draw a caution but thankfully both drivers were able to return to the event for the final laps. Karrick led Badder and Moody, who had a classic battle going for second behind the leader.

Several green flag laps were clicked off by the ‘Mighty’ Modified drivers with Karrick never missing a beat at the front of the field despite Moody and Badder doing all they could to catch him. In the end, Karrick claimed his second straight CMS win of the year ahead of Badder, Moody, Schultz, and former track champion Aaron Marrant in fifth. Rounding out the top ten were, Allen, Dalton Kirk, Test, Matt Johnson, and Danny Scrogham.

Next week once again features another weekly racing program at CMS featuring USRA B-Mods competing for national B-Mod points. All drivers must have a USRA license already or purchase a temporary license on site.
