Karrick, Binning, Wilson, Ebert, Wood and Layne Shine at Central Missouri Speedway (Warrensburg, MO) Warmer weather settled into the area Saturday evening at Central Missouri Speedway (CMS) and for the drivers and fans who chose CMS as their destination, they witnessed a swift moving program coupled with a vastly improved racing surface and close-quarters racing in six divisions.Tim Karrick of Basehor, Kansas claimed the USRA Modified feature for his first victory this season. The ULMA Late Models participated in their first race of the season with last year’s ULMA Champion Jon Binning grabbing the win. The B-Mod feature saw Jacob Ebert from Oak Grove competing against a tough field of drivers for his second-consecutive win of the season. Brett Wood also claimed his second-consecutive feature win in Street Stock action while Jerimiah Wilson celebrated an emotional win with family after earning his first-ever CMS win in Pure Stock action. Bobby Layne dominated the Lightning Sprints for his first CMS win since he last drove to victory lane in the Modified division on July 2, 2005.Pure Stocks started the heat racing action with 8 drivers checked in for competition. Darrin Christy bested Roger Detherage in his first heat win of the of the season with Jason Cochran outrunning Jeremiah Wilson for his first win of the year in heat two.The feature event started with Christy as the early race leader with Wilson and Cochran in close pursuit. Wilson made it an exciting race as he went side by side with Christy for several laps until moving into the lead. Wilson distanced himself from Christy in the closing laps as he claimed his first-ever Pure Stock feature event, Christy followed close behind for second, Cochran was third, Roger Detherage fourth, and defending Pure Stock Champion, Leroy Morrison came home fifth. B-Modified drivers had another chance to test their skills with a competitive field of 25 drivers checked into the pits. During the three qualifying heat races, Jacob Ebert won the initial heat race ahead of Sam Petty. Curtis Berry finished just ahead of Cody Frazon for the win in the second heat race while Shadron Turner crossed the finish line first ahead of Troy Carlyle in the third heat. The 15-lap B-Mod main event began with Berry and Frazon charging hard into the first turn with Berry emerging as the leader while Frazon and Carlyle fought hard for second. Frazon fought back on lap two to take the lead away from Berry as Ebert moved up just behind them and started to challenge for the top spot. After several mid-race cautions, Ebert moved past Berry into the top spot on lap 8 and never looked back as the rest of the field battled for the top five. Ebert claimed his second feature of the early season ahead of Berry in second. Troy Carlyle looked strong in third while Frazon was fourth, just ahead of Brett Wood in fifth. The Lightning Sprints made their second weekly appearance after being added to the regular program at CMS this season. The lone heat race winner was Phil Heavelow followed by Bobby Layne and Mike Trent. For the Lightning Sprint 15-lap main event, Layne led the field into the initial turn along with Trent and last week’s feature winner Beau Heavelow. Phil Heavelow suffered mechanical issues and was unable to start the feature. Layne mastered the smooth racing surface and dominated the field by distancing himself from Trent who also had a solid night with a runner-up finish in the main event. Beau Heavelow finished third, Tony Layne fourth and Paden Moreland of Bethany rounded out the top five. In the Street Stock division a pair of heat races sorted out the lineup for the main event as returning driver Donnie Dannar showed he had not lost his touch by claiming the opening heat ahead of Brian Inlow and Bryce McMillin. Brett Wood claimed the second and final heat race with Chris Dunham and Kevin Perkins following close behind. Wood and Dannar claimed front-row starting positions for the 15-lap main event. Wood quickly shot out to an early race lead ahead of Dannar and Troy Turley. Chris Dunham of California, Missouri had a strong night going inside the top five until he lost a drive shaft and retired to the pit area. Turley and Dannar waged a classic battle for second by mid-race until a late-race caution slowed the field for a restart. Wood was strong on the restart and eventually cruised to his second main event of the season. Turley worked past Dannar on the late restart to move into second at the finish with Dannar third, Kevin Perkins fourth, and Bryce McMillin finishing fifth for his first event of the year. The United Late Model Association (ULMA) returned to Warrensburg for their first of six visits this season. The opening ULMA heat race saw Layne Ehlert of Foristell, Missouri taking the win ahead of 2010 ULMA Champion Vance Wilson of Quincy, Illinois. Jon Binning worked past Dwight Niehoff on the last lap of the second heat race and grabbed the win to setup the starting line-up for the feature event. Binning and Ehlert started side-by-side on the front row with Binning coming out of turn two with the lead while Niehoff, Wilson and Ehlert ran close in pursuit of the leader. Binning held on to the lead after several challenges from Niehoff throughout the race and a caution period. In the end, Binning claimed the his first feature win this season just in front of Niehoff in second, Ehlert grabbed third after Wilson reportedly lost an engine in the closing laps while solidly running inside the top three nearly all race long. Bob King finished fourth with Gage Wineland finishing a solid fifth. In the USRA modified heats, fans were entertained with close racing action as drivers attempted to maximize passing points with their heat race finishes. Tim Karrick edged Jim Moody and Darron Fuqua in heat one while Gunner Martin crossed the line ahead of Josh Everhart and Lewis Jackson in heat two. Karrick led the early portion of the 25-lap main event after three unsuccessful attempts at the start with some impatience rearing its ugly head. On the first start, Jim Moody had an unfortunate accident in turn three as several drivers went for the same piece of real estate with Moody ending up on his lid in a roll-over incident over the embankment. Moody walked away unscathed and actually wanted safety personnel to turn the car over so he could race again. As it turned out, he was not able to return to action and although he waived to the fans upon retiring from the event, he voiced his displeasure with some of his peers for “trying to win on the first lap.” Once the Moody incident was cleared, Karrick, Josh Everhart, Gunner Martin, and Darron Fuqua ran strong at the front of the pack. Karrick was clearly the class of the field on this night as his Skyrocket chassis #1k pulled away ever so slightly throughout the event. On lap 18, while fighting for third, Fuqua’s strong run came to an end when he tangled with Richard Lane as Layne’s car slowed on the low side off turn two. Fuqua’s car suffered extensive damage as he retired from the race. Karrick mastered the track and found a strong rhythm to claim his first CMS victory since September 4, 2011. Gunner Martin recorded his best-ever CMS finish with a determined run to second with another young driver Dalton Kirk posting a solid run to third. Everhart finished a respectable fourth after challenging for the top spot for several laps while Lewis Jackson’s strong start to the season continued with a run to fifth. Week three of the championship season takes place next Saturday, April 18 for Weekly Racing in all divisions, which includes USRA Modifieds, Street Stocks, Lightning Sprints, B-Mods, and Pure Stocks.
