"Chinn makes four features during Florida Winternationals"
After a dismal 2007 Winternationals, which included failing to make the show in six races at East Bay Raceway, and only making one feature during the two week tour, “The Sniper” Wayne Chinn’s luck did a complete turn around during this year’s Florida tour, as the Bradford, Ohio star made four events and turned many heads along the way. For his efforts Chinn, who won the 2007 Independent Racing Series Rookie of the year title, now sits in second place of the prestigious Lucas Oil Dirt Car Series Rookie of the year point’s standings.
Chinn made his first career feature event at East Bay Raceway Park on Wednesday night, February 6th. After finishing fifth in his heat race, “The Sniper” would set his target on the front runners in the B-Main, after chasing them down he finished second, giving him a transfer spot into the feature. Not content with just riding around and gaining experience Chinn would excite the crowd by advancing twelve spots in the first four laps of the thirty lap event. The Erwin Chrysler Dodge/C.J. Rayburn Race Cars/Sugar Creek Packing/1Shot Graphics/AWP of Ohio/ Dargie Power/Rayburn Chassis had worked its way into the top ten when contact with another car sent it spinning to bring out a caution. With very few laps remaining Chinn again got up on the wheel and chased down the field to bring home a hard earned eleventh place finish.
The second feature appearance of the week for “The Sniper” occurred on Thursday night, February 8th. Wayne made a dramatic move on the first lap of his heat, going from the sixth starting spot to second. The ensuing laps would see him chase down and catch the leader, and several attempts for the lead that would fall just short, there were several close calls, but neither car made contact with each other, as Chinn and the heat winner pulled off the track, they received a standing ovation from the appreciative capacity crowd. In the feature the track took rubber early and made passing virtually impossible. “The Sniper” rode the rubbery surface and held off all the competitors behind him to bring home a fourteenth place finish.
The final night of action at East Bay Raceway Park held a record crowd at the Tampa short track, and with the cameras from Speed Channel on hand, the mood in the pit area changed, the action throughout the night was fierce. Wayne would finish fifth in his heat race, putting him in the fourth starting position in his last chance consolation event. It took Chinn no time to dart to the lead with everything going great until his left front suspension broke with five laps to go. As “The Sniper’s” left front tire dangled the crowd stood on their feet cheering on “The Sniper” as he bought home the victory, assuring himself a starting spot in the feature event. In the East Bay finale, Wayne and crew made the wrong tire decision, and this along with a track that provided minimal passing resulted in a twenty first place finish. This event will be re-broadcast on the Speed Channel on a later date.
Leaving East Bay Raceway Park, “The Sniper” Wayne Chinn sits second in Lucas Oil Dirtcar Series Rookie of the year chase behind accomplished driver Mike Marlar. The Erwin Chrysler Dodge/C.J. Rayburn Race Cars/Sugar Creek Packing/1Shot Graphics/AWP of Ohio/ Dargie Power/Rayburn Chassis also sits in the twenty third overall point’s position out of the eighty eight drivers who have accumulated points thus far in 2008. Chinn Motorsports will make their next Lucas Oil Dirtcar appearance at the Brownstown Speedway on March 29th for the 11th Annual Indiana Icebreaker, paying $10,000 to win winner.
Chinn Motorsports made one event at this years running of the Alltel Winternationals at Volusia Speedway Park, in Deland, Florida. After bringing home a second place finish in the consolation event, Chinn lined up near the rear of the field but did not stay there long. “The Sniper” aimed for the front and began picking cars off one after another on the hammer down surface. This was very reminiscent to the night he came from 24th position to win a feature at Florence Speedway, but his luck would run out before he could repeat that amazing feat. A hole in the radiator slowed Wayne’s shooting spree and relegated him to a last place finish. A very disappointing ending to the night, but overall an impressive two week tour, as he beat many of the best drivers in the business.
Current plans for “The Sniper” include Volunteer Speedway for the Spring Thaw on February 29th – March 1st, followed by a tentative trip to the Clarksville Speedway for the Toilet Bowl Classic. Stay tuned to the website for schedule changes, as these trips are both weather permitting.
