EAST TENNESSEE DOUBLE RACING WEEKEND UP NEXT FOR THE CHEVY SUPER SERIES

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

CARTERSVILLE, GA - America’s first “Factory Backed and Factory Built” dirt late model series, the Chevrolet Performance Super Late Model Series, is ready for a pair of East Tennessee $3,000-to-win and $300-to-start race this weekend.  On Saturday night it’s the Volunteer Chevrolet 50 at 411 Motor Speedway in Seymour, TN, and the West Chevrolet 50 on Sunday night at Tazewell Speedway in Tazewell, TN.

William Thomas of Phenix City, AL has won four of the first five Chevrolet Performance Super Late Model Series races of the 2013 season, and finished third in the race he did not win.  Thomas leads the Chevy Super Series point standings and holds a 42-point lead over National Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame Inductee Ronnie Johnson of Chattanooga, TN.

The “Chattanooga Flash” is in some familiar territory, and the 411 Motor Speedway and Tazewell Speedway races are two events Johnson has had circled on his racing calendar.

Johnson was a distant second in the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series earlier in the year, but a pair of wins at 411 Motor Speedway and a third-place finish at Tazewell Speedway turned it around, and he now leads the point standings in that series for the Chevrolet Performance 604 Engine.  All Johnson has to do in that series is start the last two races to win the Championship.

Even with the success Thomas has had in the Chevrolet Performance Super Late Model Series this season, he knows Johnson is going to battle him right down to the last turn of the last lap, of the last race.

“The competition has been tough in these races, and the four races I’ve won haven’t been easy,” Thomas said.  “In the four races I’ve won, I could have just as easily finished 12th because the competition is that close.  In qualifying, it hasn’t been that uncommon for the top ten to be separated by just a tenth of a second.”

Thomas has 494 points at the top of the Chevrolet Performance Super Late Model Series standings, and Johnson is second with 452 points.  Matthew Turner of Dawsonville, GA is third with 440 points and Chase Edge of Lafayette, AL is tied for the fourth spot with Tim Busha of Boaz, AL, who has one win, at 432 points.

Brent Barrett of Cleveland, MS is sixth in the Chevy Super Series standings with 430 points and Frank Wilson of Milton, FL is seventh with 386 points.  Adam Martin of Talladega, AL holds the eighth spot with 378 points and Brad Smith of Winston-Salem, NC is ninth with 364 points.

Carlton Freeman of Eastaboga, AL and Ross Martin of Talladega, AL are tied for the tenth spot in the Chevrolet Performance Super Late Model Series standings with 352 points apiece.

Other drivers expected for the Volunteer Chevrolet 50 on Saturday night at 411 Motor Speedway and the West Chevrolet 50 on Sunday night at Tazewell Speedway are David Brannon of Elora, TN, Ted Lackey of Munford, AL, Mark Dowdy of Waterloo, AL, and Steve Kirk of Munford, AL, Richie Stephens of Salem, AL, and National Dirt Hall of Fame Inductee Billy Thomas of Phenix City, AL.

Qualifying for the West Chevrolet 50 at Tazewell Speedway took place on August 17 before rain forced postponement of the race until this Sunday night.  Local favorites already qualified for the West Chevrolet 50 are Knoxville, TN drivers Brian Courtney and Adam Beeler.

Busha was the fast qualifier for the West Chevrolet 50, turning a lap around the 1/3-mile high-banked clay oval at Tazewell Speedway in 11.594 seconds.  Busha will be joined by William Thomas, Turner, Stephens, Barrett and Brannon for a six-car six-lap dash on Sunday night to determine the first six starting spots for the West Chevrolet 50.

The dirt late models in the Chevrolet Performance Super Late Model Series are powered by the production-based all-aluminum LS3 Engine that comes in the Chevrolet Corvette, the Chevrolet Camaro, and the Chevrolet SS that are sold at Chevrolet dealerships worldwide.

Race fans can see this engine, the race cars they power, and the men that drive them in the Chevy Fan Zone before the races this weekend.  The Cars and Stars of the Chevrolet Performance Super Late Model Series will be in the Chevy Fan Zone for photos and autographs on Saturday night at 411 Motor Speedway from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., and on Sunday night at Tazewell Speedway from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
