Robert Baker Outduels Newman for Greenville CCSDS Cash

Greenville, Mississippi (07/06/13) – The COMP Cams Super Dirt Series (CCSDS) Super Late Models rolled into Greenville Speedway (Greenville, Mississippi) on Saturday night, and it was Robert Baker, who overcame lapped traffic and Ashley Newman to snare his second CCSDS win of the 2013 season.

After setting fast time and winning his heat race Robert Baker earned the New Vision Graphics Pole Award for the feature with Kuntz & Co. Rookie of the Year leader, Ashley Newman joining him on the front row.  Baker grabbed the lead at the drop of the green flagin the 35 lap affair with Newman, Clay Fisher, Kyle Beard, and Ross Camponovo in tow.

The first of three cautions flew on lap 3 when championship contender Kyle Beard slowed with a flat tire.  He ducked into the pits before rejoining the tail of the field.

On the ensuing restart Baker jumped to a three car length lead over Newman, and by lap 8 the leaders were catching the tail of the field.  Newman began to catch Baker in traffic as Camponovo moved past Fisher into the third spot before the caution flag flew on lap 14 for a slowing Joseph Long.

With the leaders again out of traffic Baker enjoyed smooth sailing until lap 20, when heavy traffic began to plague the leaders.  Newman took advantage of the traffic to pull even with Baker for the lead on lap 21.  The duo battled side-by-side until lap 23, when Gary Beard slowed from the sixth position with a mechanical failure.

With clear track in front of the leaders Baker went on to claim his second victory of the season with the series, and the third of his career.  Newman finished in the runner-up spot for the second consecutive event, while Camponovo, Fisher, and Kellick rounded out the top five finishers.

The Larry Shaw Race Cars Hard Charger $100 bonus was claimed by Ross Camponovo.  Tommy Surrett again encountered mechanical issues that ended his night early and was awarded the Quarter Master Hard Luck Award.

Robert Baker led the way in time trials with a 14.722 second lap around the ¼ mile oval.  GRT Race Cars Heat Race #1 was won by Robert Baker with Ashley Newman winning the NEA Super Gas Heat Race #2.
