Bruce Jr. Aiming for Third Short Track Nationals Title This Weekend at I-30

Inside Line Promotions - OWASSO, Okla. (Oct. 31, 2016) - Tony Bruce Jr. knows what it takes to claim a Short Track Nationals victory.

Bruce Jr. earned back-to-back triumphs during the marquee event in 2008 and 2009 when he joined Steve Kinser and Gary Wright as the only drivers to capture the event in consecutive years.

"You don't have to be spectacular, but you have to make sure you're solid every time you touch the race track," Bruce Jr said. "You really have to complete every phase of the event. You have to make sure you get enough points to come out of the heat race and be in the qualifier. Then get enough points to start near the front of the A Main on a preliminary night. And then you have to take advantage and get in the top three to lock in for Saturday."

Bruce Jr. will attempt to join Kinser, Wright and Sammy Swindell as the only drivers with at least three Short Track Nationals victories this Thursday through Saturday at I-30 Speedway in Little Rock, Ark., for the 29th edition of the event.

Bruce Jr. will drive for the Smith Family, who have earned finishes of second and ninth this year at I-30 Speedway with Bruce Jr. behind the wheel.

"I really feel like we have a good shot to win it all," he said. "We've been there twice this year to tune up for it. I feel like we have the car where we need it to compete for a win. The more we race together the better we keep getting."

Swindell Going After Fourth Short Track Nationals Crown This Weekend at I-30

Inside Line Promotions - CONCORD, N.C. (Oct. 31, 2016) - Sammy Swindell is eying another Short Track Nationals title.

Swindell will drive for A.G. Rains this Thursday through Saturday at I-30 Speedway in Little Rock, Ark., for the 29th annual COMP Cams Short Track Nationals presented by Hoosier Tires. Swindell won the event in 2013, 2011 and 1990.

"We ran there earlier this year and got a second-place finish," he said. "We had a chance of winning that and it just didn't work out. There were a couple of things we needed to work on. I feel like we'll have a better car and it was pretty good then.

"That's a pretty tight track. I know we can pass cars and we can win races. The part you can't control is the way that format works out. There's a lot of things out of our control. The only thing we can control and I know we will is that we'll have a good car."

Swindell is coming off a frustrating outing last weekend at the Bad Boy Off Road World of Outlaws World Finals hosted by The Dirt Track at Charlotte.

"The car didn't have a lot of speed and was kind of loose," he said. "We tried to make some changes before qualifying. We made it a little bit better, but it wasn't where we needed. That format is based off qualifying where you have to be up front."

Swindell and the Blazin' Racin' team kicked off the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series event last Thursday by qualifying 21st quickest in their group for Friday's show and 16th for Saturday's event.

Swindell rebounded from the qualifying result to charge from seventh to third place in a heat race on Friday to lock the team into the main event.

"We changed the car to where I knew I'd get a good start," he said. "I was able to do that and nobody got in the way and was able to get right up to third. That made it definitely easier for us as far as not having to go through the other (consolation) races because we'd have been toward the back. I think that was our only chance of making the main was to make sure we transferred through the heat."

Swindell advanced from his 18th starting position toward the top 10 during the main event before ending 19th.

"The car was better, but we had an issue toward the end that slowed us down," he said. "I think I lost about five spots. We learned some stuff from that for Saturday."

The event finale began on Saturday with Swindell maneuvering from eighth to fifth place in a heat race to again secure a lock-in position to the main event. He started the feature on the inside of the 10th row.

"When we got our warm-up lap I could tell the car was a lot better," he said. "We went in a direction I'd went with at places like that. I felt like the car was really good. We got by a car on the start, but I got held up by a guy in front. Going into turn three I was staying real tight with the tires. You had to slow down to wait and be patient to get a good drive off the exit of the corners. I drove in on the car in front of me. It slipped out and I had to wait. The car behind me turned me and I clipped an infield tire so that was the end of the night."

Swindell was unable to restart the race following the incident on the second lap.

"I want to thank Todd, Susan and Greg for the opportunity to run with them for a few races this year," he said.

Kevin Swindell Returning to I-30 Speedway This Weekend as Bayston Makes Short Track Nationals Debut

Inside Line Promotions - GERMANTOWN, Tenn. (Oct. 31, 2016) - Kevin Swindell has fond memories of his history at I-30 Speedway.

"It was the most home track I ever had," he said. "I ran the mini sprint there 10 or 11 times. That was where I ran the micro the most I'd say."

Swindell also competed at the quarter-mile oval in Little Rock, Ark., in a 360ci sprint car a handful of times, mostly during the Short Track Nationals.

"I ran second (in 2005) when I was 16," he said. "I led part of the race and it laid rubber. I got beat because I didn't find it first."

Swindell will return to the bullring this Thursday through Saturday for the 29th edition of the prestigious event. This time Swindell is a car owner with Spencer Bayston behind the wheel.

"So far he's surprised me at how good he's done," Swindell said. "We go in trying to make the best of the situation and get more than that. I think now running the 410 as much as he has, everything slows down in the 360. I think the higher speed stuff has been more of a struggle than the slower. A place like this and with a 360 backing the pace down I think it'll be good for him."

This weekend will mark Bayston's debut at the track as well as his first time competing in a winged sprint car with a 360ci engine.

"Kevin and I were talking about that," he said. "After racing at Atomic Speedway (a couple weeks ago) I was pretty wormn out and it was a handful. It will be nice down going down a level. He said it will be a little slower and easier on me.

"Of the couple of times I've been in the car Kevin has given me a great race car. We have a lot of confidence going into Short Track Nationals. I'd like to say we can come out of there with a couple top-five finishes. And picking up a win would be big. I think it's doable."

Starks Improves Throughout World Finals at The Dirt Track at Charlotte

Inside Line Promotions - CONCORD, N.C. (Oct. 31, 2016) - Trey Starks showed improvement throughout the Bad Boy Off Road World of Outlaws World Finals last weekend.

Starks and car owner Jeff McCall opened the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series at The Dirt Track at Charlotte last Thursday by qualifying 18 th quickest in their group for Friday's program and 13th quickest for Saturday's event.

"We didn't have a good qualifying effort," Starks said. "We knew we'd have to do some work. The first night we put ourselves pretty far back and we didn't get a good start in the heat. We fell back to last and ended up working our way up to fifth. We were working on fourth at the line. That was a good step for the team."

Starks rebounded from the slow start to place fifth in a heat race on Friday. That relegated him to the C Main, where he charged from sixth to second place to transfer into the back of the Last Chance Showdown.

"We ran really well in the C Main to get us into the B Main," he said. "We didn't have a whole lot of time and we knew we were starting pretty far back. We made some aggressive adjustments and it wasn't the ones to make."

Starks advanced to place 12th in the consolation race.

He returned to the track on Saturday for the event finale.

"The track wasn't very conducive to passing in the heat race," he said. "We didn't get a good start and there wasn't a ton we could do. The track was wet and one lane."

Starks finished ninth in the heat race before he advanced to place fourth in the Last Chance Showdown to capture a transfer into the main event.

"There was a pretty big cushion on both ends, which doesn't normally happen there," he said. "I couldn't really run where I wanted to run so I had to improvise and run on some of the parts of the track that wasn't preferred. We passed a few cars so it was a good end to the weekend."

Starks capped the event with a 19th-place result. He is set to make his debut at I-30 Speedway in Little Rock, Ark., this Thursday through Saturday for the 29th annual COMP Cams Short Track Nationals presented by Hoosier Tires.

"Jeff has won it with Jason Meyers and ran third with Tim Shaffer so there will be some high expectations this weekend," he said. "I'm excited to get to race at I-30 and during the Short Track Nationals for the first time in my career."
