Jason Hughes Claims Third USMTS National Championship

Westville, Oklahoma (09/28/16) – For the second-straight year and for the third time in his career, Jason Hughes claimed the United States Modified Touring Series (USMTS) championship.

The feat was far from easy for the pilot of the #12 West Siloam Pawn/ Hughes Chassis/ Mullins Racing Engine Modified as the battle literally went down to the final lap of the final event.

Closing out The Hunt for the United States Modified Touring Series (USMTS) Casey’s Cup powered by S&S Fishing & Rental, Jason Hughes traveled to Deer Creek Speedway (Spring Valley, Minnesota) on Thursday night for the 18th Annual Featherlite Fall Jamboree. Drawing a stacked field of 79 Modifieds, Hughes started the night off with a heat race win sending him into the redraw.

Receiving the 2nd-starting spot for the main event, Jason needed to finish 2nd or better to guarantee his 3rd-career USMTS National Championship. Jumping into the lead early in the event, Jason slipped backed to the 3rd position during the middle stages of the race, while championship challenger, Cade Dillard continued to make his way to the front. Holding off a charging Chris Brown late in the race, Jason Hughes scored a runner-up finish behind Cade Dillard with Brown, R.C. Whitwell, and Zack VanderBeek rounding out the Top 5.

Hughes was crowned the USMTS title after edging Cade Dillard by 3 points.

“I was just paying attention a lap at a time, trying to drive as hard as I could,” said Hughes. “It’s been a lot of fun racing with them guys all year long. They work their tails off too, and we’ve been running up and down the road together and parking beside each other. It’s been fun.

“When he [Cade Dillard] got up there and led all them laps I knew we had to run second. I was thankful for that caution and we held on there.” Hughes concluded by saying, “I just want to thank my team, my sponsors, my fans, and everyone that supports my racing program.

Returning on Friday for the second round of the Fall Jamboree, Hughes advanced nine spots in his heat posting a 3rd-place finish. Starting in 5th for the 42-lap A-Main, Jason jumped up one position scoring a 4th-place finish behind Lucas Schott, Cade Dillard, and Brandon Davis with Chris Brown coming in 5th.

For the final night of the 18th Annual Featherlite Fall Jamboree, Hughes logged a 10th-place outing in his heat sending him into the B-Main. Failing to start his consolation event, Jason relied on a provisional to make the $10,000-to-win finale. Coming from the 31st-starting position, Jason Hughes wheeled his way through the field 23 positions, notching an 8th-place finish in the 42-lapper.
Complete results and the latest standings can be found at www.USMTS.com .

This week Hughes will make the trip to Lakeside Speedway (Kansas City, Kansas) to compete in two nights of USMTS action. On Thursday night the program will be headlined by twin $1,500-to-win features. Friday night will play host to the rescheduled Grant Junghans Memorial, which will boast a total payout of more than $100,000 for the $10,002-to-win event. Herrera Scores Victory, Three Top 10s During Hockett/McMillin Memorial

Inside Line Promotions - WHEATLAND, Mo. (Sept. 28, 2016) - Johnny Herrera opened the Hockett/McMillin Memorial last weekend with a big win before he capped the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour event with a pair of hard charges.

The tripleheader hosted by Lucas Oil Speedway began last Thursday when Herrera advanced from fourth to second place in a heat race before he won a qualifier. That lined him up on the inside of the second row for the main event.

"You want to get a good start and put yourself in a good position," he said. "We kept pace there and rode around there. A couple of times we about got the lead and the yellow came out. I showed Sammy (Swindell) a nose one time and he dropped down like any good racer would. I just paced myself. When you're leading it's hard to judge where to go. The best line seemed to change and move around from the start to the end. Fortunately, we made the right choices and moved at the right time."

Herrera passed Swindell for the top spot on a restart on Lap 22 and he led the final four laps to capture his sixth victory of the season.

"We had a good car and we put ourselves in the right position," he said. "That was a good win for us."

Herrera returned to Lucas Oil Speedway on Friday for the second round of the event, which began with Herrera finishing fifth in a heat race. That relegated him to the eighth starting position in a B Main. He maneuvered into the runner-up position to earn a transfer into the back of the main event, in which he powered from 20th to a 10th-place result. That gave him the Hard Charger Award for passing the most cars.

"We got ourselves into the feature," he said. "We were better than a 10th-place car, but that's all I could get. The first lap I passed five or six cars and then picked them off when I could."

The event wrapped up on Saturday with Herrera driving from fifth to second place in a heat race before he got upside down in a qualifier.

"We made a driver error and got it turned over," he said. "We had to come back and run the B Main again and we got ourselves into the A Main. We got up to around eighth, but toward the end (of the A Main) we had a bleeder stick on us and we lost a lot of drive in our left rear."

Herrera placed second in a B Main before charging from 21st to 10th in the main event.

He will return to action this Saturday at I-80 Speedway in Greenwood, Neb., for the Midwest Fall Brawl V with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour.

Bergman Captures Hockett/McMillin Memorial Hard Charger Award During Opening Round

Inside Line Promotions - WHEATLAND, Mo. (Sept. 28, 2016) - Seth Bergman showcased moments of strength during the Hockett/McMillin Memorial last weekend at Lucas Oil Speedway.

The brightest moment of the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour tripleheader came on the opening night last Thursday, when Bergman placed fourth in a heat race and third in a B Main to miss transferring into the main event by only one spot. That forced him to use a provisional to start the feature on the inside of the 12th row.

"We made a few changes from what we learned in the heat race and the B Main and the car was a lot better in the feature," he said. "We were able to maneuver our way through the field pretty good and end on a positive note."

Bergman rallied from 23rd to post a ninth-place finish, which marked his 41st top 10 of the season and earned him the Hard Charger Award for passing the most cars.

Unfortunately, the remainder of the weekend didn't go as well. Bergman finished fifth in a heat race and eighth in a B Main on Friday. He used a provisional to advance into the main event, which ended in a DNF.

The event finale on Saturday began with Bergman winning a heat race before he picked up a position to garner a third-place result in a qualifier. That locked him into the 16th starting position for the main event. However, a flat tire relegated him to another DNF.

"That was frustrating to end the weekend that way," he said. "We struggled at times all weekend, but seemed to be on the right note on Saturday when we ran into some bad luck. We'll just move on to the next one."

Bergman will return to action this Saturday at I-80 Speedway in Greenwood, Neb., for the Midwest Fall Brawl V with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour.

Sides Charges During World of Outlaws Races at Hartford and Lernerville

Inside Line Promotions - SARVER, Pa. (Sept. 27, 2016) - Jason Sides was a charger last week during a trio of World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series events in three different states.

The action began a week ago Wednesday at Hartford Speedway in Hartford, Mich., where Sides qualified 19th quickest before placing seventh in a heat race. That lined him up on the inside of the 10th row for the main event.

"We didn't qualify real well, but we made some changes after the heat race and got the car a lot better for the main event," he said. "It wasn't real good at the beginning. We may have got a couple of cars early. Then it got strung out. We couldn't really keep up with the guys up front. With all the fuel it was really tight early. When some of that fuel burned off the car got really good. About halfway through we got a lot better and started moving forward. We had a caution or two and that helped on some of the restarts. It was a pretty good night after starting 19th."

Sides maneuvered from 19th to garner a seventh-place finish, which was his 30th top 10 of the season and earned the Hard Charger Award for passing the most cars.

He returned to action on Friday at Eldora Speedway near Rossburg, Ohio, during the 4-Crown Nationals. Sides timed in 11th quickest before placing third in a heat race. That started him on the inside of the sixth row for the feature.

"We lost a few spots early and then got going pretty good," he said. "Once you get lapped you're pretty much done. There were a few other cars that got lapped. Late in the race we were running about where we started. Coming into turn three for the checkered we had a flat left rear tire and it spun us around so instead of finishing around 12th we ended up 16th."

The weekend concluded on Saturday at Lernerville Speedway during the Commonwealth Clash. Sides qualified 10th quickest and he settled for a fifth-place finish in a heat race after narrowly avoiding a crash. That lined him up 18th for the main event.

"We made a couple of changes, but the changes weren't what we needed," he said. "We had an open red flag so we changed the left rear shock and got the car better. We could run the bottom better. The track was wet all night and it made for a fast track. It was kinda hard to pass, but we were able to move forward after that shock change."

Sides advanced from 18th to end 11th, which was tied for the most cars passed in the feature.

He is scheduled to compete this Thursday through Saturday at Williams Grove Speedway in Mechanicsburg, Pa., for the National Open with the World of Outlaws.

Bruce Jr. Posts Top Five During Hockett/McMillin Memorial Tripleheader

Inside Line Promotions - WHEATLAND, Mo. (Sept. 27, 2016) - Tony Bruce Jr. produced strong results throughout the Hockett/McMillin Memorial last weekend at Lucas Oil Speedway.

Bruce Jr., who was driving for the Smith Family, opened the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour tripleheader last Thursday by winning a heat race. He then placed third in a qualifier to lock into the 12th starting position for the main event.

"I got to eighth at one point," he said. "The top in turns one and two was really tricky. Unfortunately, it got the best of me and I lost a whole bunch of spots on the last restart. I just made a mistake and it cost me."

Bruce Jr. ended with a 12th-place result.

He returned to the 3/8-mile oval on Friday for Round 2, which began with Bruce Jr. advancing from fourth to second place in a heat race before he won a qualifier. That ranked him second in overall points and lined the team up on the outside of the front row for the main event.

"We were pretty good," he said. "For some reason we kept getting tighter as the race went on. Toward the end of the race we started to get too tight to run the top and we held on for fourth."

The fourth-place finish helped Bruce Jr. rank third in preliminary points, which locked him into the third starting position for Saturday's $10,000-to-win main event.

"We were running the topside for a majority of the race," he said. "Unfortunately, I let turn one get the best of me again. I caught it wrong and fell off the track about halfway through and lost a whole bunch of spots."

Bruce Jr. rallied back from the miscue to record a 13th-place finish.

"I felt overall we had a solid weekend," he said. "More than anything making the show against 60 cars is a task in itself. It wasn't what we wanted on Saturday, but it was a solid weekend. I'm fortunate enough to be able to drive for the Smith Family. We really don't race as much as the people we were racing with. To be as competitive as we were is nothing to hang our heads about. Every time I race for them we're getting faster and faster."

Bruce Jr. and the team are scheduled to return to action Oct. 14-15 at Devil's Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, Texas, with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour.

Hagar Progresses Throughout Hockett/McMillin Memorial at Lucas Oil Speedway

Inside Line Promotions - WHEATLAND, Mo. (Sept. 27, 2016) - Derek Hagar continuously made improvements last weekend during the three-day Hockett/McMillin Memorial at Lucas Oil Speedway, where he raced both winged and non-wing sprint cars.

"The weekend started out as a little bit of a struggle," he said. "I about got upside down in one of the non-winged heat races, but didn't. The winged side was a bit better."

Thursday night's WAR Sprint Car Series non-wing action resulted in a seventh-place heat race finish and a fourth-place result in the B Main.

In the winged car, Hagar produced a heat race win and a runner-up finish in a qualifier. With these two solid results, Hagar lined up sixth in the 25-lap Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour feature. Unfortunately, his night ended early with a DNF.

"A tie rod bolt broke and I almost crashed," he said. "We just couldn't get it fixed in time to get back out there."

Hagar returned to the 3/8-mile track on Friday night and finished second in both the non-wing heat race and the feature.

In the winged sprint he placed fourth in a heat race and eighth in the qualifier before advancing from 22nd to 16th in the feature.

The weekend wrapped up on Saturday, when Hagar won his non-wing heat and gained nearly 10 spots in the feature, charging from 14th to fifth.

His night in the winged car started with a fourth-place heat race finish and a second-place result in a qualifier. Hagar was forced to run a B Main, which he won to earn the 18th starting position for the main event.

"The track was racy pretty early," he said. "I found the middle of the race track about halfway through and started passing cars. We had a really good car. I wish we could have started toward the front, but it kind of felt like a win after the long weekend we had."

Hagar was awarded the hard charger of the night after he gained 13 positions to finish fifth.

Next up, Hagar will pilot his winged sprint car this Saturday at the Fall Nationals hosted by Riverside International Speedway in West Memphis, Ark.

Hanks Garners Top 10 at Hockett/McMillin Memorial at Lucas Oil Speedway

Inside Line Promotions - WHEATLAND, Mo. (Sept. 27, 2016) - Brandon Hanks nearly posted a pair of top-10 finishes last weekend during the Hockett/McMillin Memorial.

Hanks opened the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour tripleheader at Lucas Oil Speedway last Thursday by advancing from eighth to seventh place in a heat race and from ninth to sixth place in a B Main.

"Thursday night was a little disappointing," he said. "Even though we had a bad draw we were still too tight. We tried to go back with the setup how we won earlier this year. We were way, way too tight.

"We changed things up and got a little better draw on Friday. Things started clicking. The car got better and we got a little luckier."

Hanks maneuvered from sixth to third place in a heat race and he won a qualifier on Friday to lock himself into the fourth starting position for the 25-lap main event.

"We were good, just not great," he said. "We were running around sixth pretty much the whole race. With about three laps to go Sam Hafertepe Jr. was passing me. When he slid me it killed my momentum and two other cars got by me. So the final result doesn't show where we were most of the race."

Hanks ended with a ninth-place result, which was his 20th top 10 of the season.

The weekend concluded on Saturday at Lucas Oil Speedway, where Hanks won a heat race, finished sixth in a qualifier and placed second in a B Main to transfer into the back of the $10,000-to-win main event.

"We really struggled the first 10 laps," he said. "We were terrible. They tilled the track up before we went out there and we tried a few things to help and it didn't work. That car was evil. We got that open red about 10 laps in and we basically reversed what we did. It was a lot better. We went from about 24th to 11th. I feel good about how we rebounded."

Hanks rallied to record an 11th-place finish.

"It was real, real tough," he said. "There were 60-plus cars there. To come out with finishes of ninth and 11th is pretty good."

Hanks will take this weekend off before returning to action Oct. 8 at Timberline Speedway in Corley, Texas, with the ASCS Red River Region.

Dover Moves Forward Throughout Hockett/McMillin Memorial

Inside Line Promotions - WHEATLAND, Mo. (Sept. 27, 2016) - Jack Dover is happy with his performance throughout the Hockett/McMillin Memorial last weekend at Lucas Oil Speedway.

Dover faced more than 60 other drivers during the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour tripleheader, which began on Thursday with a high pill draw. Dover advanced from seventh to fifth place in a heat race, which relegated him to a B Main.

He maneuvered from fifth to win the consolation race and earn a transfer into the 19th starting position for the 25-lap feature.

"The track was too locked down and then it got really good come feature time," he said. "We watched the track real close and went from fifth to first in the B Main. We tightened our car up a little more for the feature and moved forward. It was a respectable night."

Dover rallied to an 11th-place result.

He returned to the 3/8-mile oval on Friday for Round 2, which Dover began by charging from fourth to second place in a heat race before he ended third in a qualifier. That lined him up on the outside of the fifth row for the main event.

"We tried some stuff in the feature and it worked," he said. "I feel like we were a podium car, but we got behind Tony Bruce Jr. and he was running my line and I couldn't get around him. It was a good result to get a top five out of 60 cars."

Dover ended with a fifth-place finish, which was his 23rd top five of the season.

The event concluded on Saturday with Dover powering from sixth to third place in a heat race. Unfortunately, he was run into by another driver in the qualifier. The contact resulted in Dover getting upside down and ending up with a ninth-place result in the race. That relegated him to a B Main, where he advanced from sixth to third place and missed a transfer into the A Main by only one position.

"We were really good, but had that mishap in the qualifier that ruined the night," he said. "Once we got to third in the B Main we were even with first and second place. We just needed track position.

"I'm happy with the weekend. Any time we can move forward it's a good night and we did that all three nights."

Dover looks to wrap up his second straight Carpetland Nebraska 360 Sprints championship this Saturday when he will compete at I-80 Speedway in Greenwood, Neb., for the Midwest Fall Brawl V. The event is co-sanctioned with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour.
