Bruce Jr. Earns Top Fives in Oklahoma and Arkansas

Inside Line Promotions - LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (July 10, 2016) - Tony Bruce Jr. scored a pair of top-five finishes last weekend while driving for Jeff Smith.

The duo kicked off the weekend on Thursday at Creek County Speedway in Sapulpa, Okla., where Bruce Jr. won a heat race from the pole. That locked him into the feature redraw, where he pulled the No. 6 to start the main event on the outside of the third row.

"The track was right around the bottom and we really couldn't do much," he said. "I went from sixth to third at the beginning of the race. We had a bunch of cautions. I got tired of riding around. I tried to make the top work on restarts and fell back a spot. It was one of those deals where it was 25 laps of riding in the infield."

Bruce Jr. ended with a fourth-place result.

Friday's ASCS Red River Region race at Outlaw Motor Speedway in Wainwright, Okla., rained out and the team ventured to I-30 Speedway on Saturday to wrap up the weekend.

"We struggled real bad in the heat race," he said. "We were just not very good. This is the growing pains of a new team. We made some changes for the main event and felt like those were the right changes. We had a really solid car for the A Main."

Bruce Jr., who finished where he started - fourth - in the heat race, lined up on the inside of the seventh row for the main event.

"At the beginning the track was pretty rough from a lot of the rain they had in the area," he said. "I think the polesitter wrecked in front of the field on the start so we were able to move up without having to do anything. Once we got rolling we were able to slowly pick people off one by one. I would go in really high and come off the corners by the infield tires. I had a shot at the lead when we were in traffic. When the caution came out with about six laps to go I knew it'd be tough to pass Tim Crawley in open air."

Bruce Jr. maneuvered from 13th to the runner-up result, which was his sixth top five this season.

He will take next weekend off before teaming back up with Smith to race on July 22 at U.S. 36 Speedway in Osborn, Mo., with the ASCS Warrior Region; July 23 at Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville, Iowa; and July 24 at Double X Speedway in California, Mo., with the ASCS Warrior Region.

Big Game Motorsports and Lasoski Return to Victory Lane at Knoxville

Inside Line Promotions - KNOXVILLE, Iowa (July 11, 2016) - Big Game Motorsports and Danny Lasoski captured their fifth victory of the season last Saturday at Knoxville Raceway.

"The Knoxville Nationals is first and foremost on our list," Lasoski said. "Every week is a practice. We're not where we need to be, but we're way closer than we've been in the last month."

Lasoski opened the night by setting quick time during qualifying. The Muddy sponsored team then advanced from sixth to third place in a heat race and started the main event on the inside of the second row.

Lasoski moved into the runner-up position on the opening lap and he chased down Davey Heskin for the top spot a few laps later.

"We were setting a good pace," Lasoski said. "With five laps to go something hit our nose wing. I couldn't even run half throttle. The front wing laid down and had the right front up in the air. It was like a bulldozer with a blade in the air."

Lasoski held on for his 110th career trip to Victory Lane at the track. It also boosted his lead in the championship standings to 362 points.

That capped a weekend that began on Friday at Cedar Lake Speedway in New Richmond, Wis., with the National Sprint League and World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series.

"With the World of Outlaws format you have to qualify well and we just didn't get it done," he said. "I thought we made a way better lap than that. It just didn't prove it when the stopwatch stopped."

Lasoski went out late to qualify and ended with the 17th quickest qualifying run. He picked up a spot in the heat race to finish fourth before ending 14th in the main event.

"We were marred in the back and stayed there," he said. "It was one of those nights you'd just soon forget."

Lasoski will pilot his own sprint car this weekend during the 33rd annual Kings Royal Thursday through Saturday at Eldora Speedway near Rossburg, Ohio, with the World of Outlaws while Guy Forbrook and the crew work on building new cars.

The Muddy team will return to action July 22 at Jackson Motorplex in Jackson, Minn., and July 23 at Knoxville Raceway.

Bergman Finishes Sixth and Fourth during Doubleheader at Gallatin

Inside Line Promotions - BELGRADE, Mont. (July 11, 2016) - Seth Bergman's return to Gallatin Speedway yielded two top 10s last weekend with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour.

Bergman, who last raced at the track in August 2008, opened the doubleheader on Friday by winning a heat race after starting on the outside of the front row. That earned him a trip into the feature redraw, where he pulled the No. 3 to start the main event on the inside of the second row.

Bergman battled for a top five throughout the main event before ending sixth.

"We didn't hit the setup perfectly and weren't in contention for the win like we were trying to be," he said. "We got things better for Saturday, but had to come from further back."

Bergman capped the weekend on Saturday by advancing from third to second place in a heat race. That lined him up on the outside of the sixth row for the main event.

"The track took rubber so passing was at a premium," he said. "I tried to race a smart race and not burn up the tires too quickly. We were able to get a couple of positions when other people had tire issues and we made a few passes to rebound and earn a top five."

Bergman maneuvered from 12th to a fourth-place result, which was his 14th top five of the season.

He will return to ASCS National Tour competition July 22-23 at Black Hills Speedway in Rapid City, S.D.

Rilat Seeking First Win of Season with Saumure This Weekend at NSA Shootout

Inside Line Promotions - FORNEY, Texas (July 11, 2016) - Travis Rilat is heading to Montana this weekend to tackle the opening doubleheader of the NSA Shootout on Friday and Saturday at Billings Motorsports Park.

Rilat will drive for Richard Saumure during the two-day event, which is capped by a $7,500-to-win show.

"There's a lot of money on the line this weekend so hopefully we can bring a big chunk of that home," Rilat said. "I think we can win a race or two this weekend. We've won in Billings before and it'd be great to do it again with all that money up for grabs."

Rilat and Saumure raced in Montana six times last season with three wins and six top-five finishes. Four of those races came at Billings Motorsports Park, where Rilat won twice, earned one runner-up result and scored a fourth-place finish.

"We get around that track pretty well," he said. "It's always a confidence booster when you return to a track where you've had success. We're looking for our first win together this season so I think this weekend would be a great time to accomplish that."

Rilat and Saumure went to Montana once this season, but the races were rained out. The duo has also run into a trio of DNFs the last four times out so Rilat hopes this weekend will spark a turnaround.

"We've had a lot of speed, but just haven't caught the breaks we need to be racing for the win," he said. "Hopefully we'll get back on the right track this weekend at a place where we've had a lot of success."

Rilat has earned multiple wins driving for Saumure each of the last four years.

SEASON STATS -

21 races, 1 win, 4 top fives, 8 top 10s, 12 top 15s, 17 top 20s

Sides Excited for Brad Doty Classic and Kings Royal This Week

Inside Line Promotions - NEW RICHMOND, Wis. (July 11, 2016) - Jason Sides has a pair of marquee events on tap this weekend.

Sides will tackle the Brad Doty Classic on Tuesday at Attica Raceway Park in Attica, Ohio, before competing in the 33rd annual Kings Royal Thursday through Saturday at Eldora Speedway near Rossburg, Ohio, with the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series.

"It'll be a good week," he said. "I always like the Brad Doty race because he put a lot into this sport. Last year we got rained out and he needs a good race. And it'll be good to have an extra day at Eldora for the Kings Royal."

Sides won the Kings Royal in 2004. His best finish at the $50,000-to-win event since then was a 10th-place result in 2014.

Sides is coming off a frustrating weekend at Cedar Lake Speedway during the FVP Outlaws at Cedar Lake event, which began on Friday with Sides qualifying 14 th quickest before placing third in a heat race.

"We started out decent," he said. "We were one spot out of the dash. We were pretty good there last year so we were confident. We pushed off for the feature and on Lap 8 coming off the bottom in turn two it started vibrating real bad so I pulled it out of gear. It turns out I broke a u-joint."

Sides was in contention for a top 10 when the part failure occurred. He was credited with a 23rd-place finish.

The team returned to the track on Saturday for the finale. Sides timed in 13th quickest and he ended sixth in a heat race. That lined him up on the outside of the eighth row for the main event.

"In the feature I was going ok and moving through there," he said. "It had a top and a bottom. We were good around the bottom. I got a little greedy and clipped the infield tire. It spun me around and I did like two 360s and kept going in a huge cloud of dust. There was no yellow and about that time (Donny) Schatz and (Brad) Sweet went by so I was a lap down. If we wouldn't have been a lap down we would have been 12th or 13th because I passed about six cars on the last two restarts and ended up on the track 12th, but scored 18th because we were a lap down."

Sides was scored in the 18th finishing position. It was the first week in nearly two months without a top-10 finish for Sides.

Mike Harrison On the Rise, Balances Racing with Life in Final Summit Modified Nationals Stretch

Harrison picks up his second win of the season

By Brendan Capria

CONCORD, N.C. - July 11, 2016 - Looking back into racing history, fans of the sport have readily-available statistics as to why drivers rise to greatness. For Mike Harrison however, it is the how that is difficult to overlook. Though Harrison has the numbers to stake his claim in DIRTcar Racing, the black-and-white numbers are not as lustrous as the color behind the paper.

In 2015, Harrison became the DIRTcar Summit Racing Equipment Modified Nationals champion, the DIRTcar UMP Modified National champion and Southern Illinois region champion in 2015. The Highland Creek, Ill., amassed 36 wins, 11 top-five and three top-ten finishes in 60 starts.

As the Summit Modified Nationals enters its final 2016 stretch, Harrison, sitting second in the championship standings, is poised to claim another title - his fifth. He is just three points out of the lead.

His year of triumph can be defined by his numbers, but Harrison does not devote every waking-second to racing in order to compete at the high level he has proven. He divvies his time slide-jobbing through a clay oval with cultivating the ground with a tractor. Harrison works on a farm for a living.

Just south from his Highland home is Rinderer Farms, a 20,000-acre plot where Harrison plants and harvests wheat, beans and corn. Two weeks out from the start of this year's Summer Nationals "Hell Tour," he was planting while his crew - comprised of his two sons - prepared the car.

Harrison said the balancing act is difficult in the beginning months, and once September's fall harvest rolls around he finds his time running thin yet again. But this does not deter him from his passion for racing, which blossomed from the time he was in his early-teens.

"Yeah, that's pretty much what I'm doing," said Harrison after explaining his ever-growing "To Do" list. "I still have to pay the bills. I got to take care of that before the race. I'm just a normal, small-town, family guy who's just racing."

"Just racing" is 440 career wins since 1995, and that mark is growing like his crops. Business is booming on both fronts for Harrison, who will surpass Jimmy Owen's record of four-championships if he brings another home in 2016. Even with the record in sight, his nerves run colder than a mid-December harvest.

"I tell people every year because they ask it…" Harrison explains. "Do I want to not win it? No. Do I want to win it? Yeah. Am I going to drive myself nuts trying to win it? No. I'm going to go out there, do the best I can and try to win races. And we'll see at the end. It's going to play out how it's going to play out. There's really nothing anyone can do besides doing your absolute best."

His best is not only competing at a high level, but also putting in an honest day's work on the farm. Harrison is a modest man - he talked little about his feats - but he prides himself on his two lines of work. If there is a show close to home, Harrison will return home to farm even for half the day before travelling to the next race on the schedule. The Summit Modified Nationals is 29 races in a two-month span.

Though there is no routine to his days - racing and farming are dependent on one another - one thing is consistent. Harrison's voice grew up-beat. Coming from the day he first grabbed the wheel as a high-schooler and the day he began working on the farm eight years ago, he said "it's all about having fun with what you do."

Even on a bad day.

"Take it with a grain of salt, go home, work on yourself and go back the next night not drooling over the weekend before," Harrison said. "Our number 1 rule is not to beat ourselves. If we don't, we have a chance to win every race."

Harrison finds comfort in having past success at most of the tracks in the season schedule. Racing is his wheelhouse, and he enjoys the challenge of new arrivals in the field of competitors. That is what makes the grueling schedule exciting for him year-to-year, even if his wife has to drive him to the track every-so-often for him to get a few more hours of sleep.

Harrison will continue to work in the fields from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. when he can, and he will continue his pursuit toward a fifth championship. Every Summit Modified Nationals to him ironically is heaven-sent - a time when he can share with his family. Above racing and crops, that is his priority. The shortness of time is worth it to him.

"It's a never ending battle," said Harrison, whether it is servicing farm equipment or his racecar. "Shoot, the next two weeks we have 10 races or so. But we'll keep on plugging."

The DIRTcar Summit Racing Equipment Modified Nationals enters its final stretch on Tuesday, July 12 as the series takes on Plymouth (Ind.) Speedway. Just seven more races are left in the season's schedule - plenty of time for Harrison to close his three-point championship deficit and catch young Nick Hoffman in his pursuit of a fifth Summit Modified Nationals title.
