Bub McCool Wins Wild One in MSCCS Go at Greenville

Vicksburg, MS (07/29/14) – Bub McCool continued his mid-season win streak on Saturday night at Greenville Speedway (Greenville, Mississippi) with a $2,500 victory in his #57J McCool Logging/ Victory Circle/Jay D ickens Racing Engine Super Late Model.

The Mississippi State Championship Challenge Series (MSCCS) returned to the gumbo oval for a $2,500-to-win program, and McCool repeated the last series' visit to the facility with a trip to victory lane, however his visit to the winner's circle did not come easy. Twenty-five Super Late Models registered for the event, as Bub started his outing by timing in fourth in his group during qualifications to earn a spot in the dash. He later finished sixth in the dash, which positioned him starting sixth in the in the 50 lap main event.

The third time was the charm after the first two attempts to start the race were halted by a caution before a lap could be completed. McCool showed strength early, getting by David Breazeale and Brian Rickman to lock in the third spot. As the leaders began to work lap traffic, McCool passed Duke Palasini for second, just as the race's third caution waved.

Back under green McCool begun to pressure leader Rick Rickman for the top spot, as Rickman made contact with the outside wall in turn two. On lap 14 the duo split a lap car with Rickman on the bottom and McCool on top, giving McCool the advantage to claim the top spot. Heavy lapped traffic continued to play in McCool's favor as he opened a comfortable gap between himself and Rickman at the halfway point.

Disaster struck on lap 29 when the leaders and lapped cars mixed to bring out the race's final yellow. As McCool slid out of turn two, Leon Henderson drifted into the center of the exit, collecting second-place, Rick Rickman, defacing the side of his car. Rickman's damage was too severe to continue and McCool would be signaled for the caution. McCool's blistering pace had him lapping well into the top 5 -McCool restarted fourth.

After a brief caution period for clean-up, Brian Rickman assumed the point with Breazeale in second, followed by Palasini. But within four laps McCool had charged back to second, and began to close the distance on the leader with ten laps remaining. One circuit later McCool drove by Rickman on the low side in turn four to reclaim the lead.

Rickman would attempt to respond, but McCool's lead continuously grew as the laps wound down. Bub grabbed the third consecutive victory of his mid-season hot-streak, and his second straight win at Greenville's gumbo oval over Rickman, Palasini, Breazeale, and Chad Thrash.

“It was a wild night to say the least," said McCool. “I wasn’t really happy about going to the tail, but I knew that I had lapped a lot of cars and I had a good hot rod.” He concludes by noting, “It all worked out.”

The upcoming week holds two events for McCool. On Thursday, July 31st a $3,500-to-win, Schaeffer’s Oil Southern Nationals event is scheduled for Duck River Raceway Park (Wheel, Tennessee). Career Win for Newman; Beard Tops North Alabama

Ripley, Tennessee (07/29/14) – Upton Motorsports enjoyed a great weekend as both team drivers, Ashley Newman and Kyle Beard parked their hot rods in victory lane.

Kyle Beard traveled to Moulton Speedway (Danville, Alabama) on Friday night in his #86 Gary Beard Trucking/Bob Pierce/Jay Dickens Racing Engine Super Late Model for an unsanctioned $2,000-to-win race. Twenty-four Super Late Models registered for battle, and Beard locked into the eighth starting spot on the feature grid via preliminary action. During the course of the finale Kyle advanced to a fourth place finish behind race winner, Eric Cooley, Ronnie Johnson, and Ronny Lee Hollingsworth. Full results from the event are available at www.MoultonRaceway.com .

On Saturday night, Kyle Beard and the Upton Motorsports team invaded North Alabama Speedway (Tuscumbia, Alabama). Another $2,000-to-win Super Late Model program was contested, which would see Beard snare his second victory of the 2014 season. Kyle posted the overall fastest lap during qualifications, locking him into the pole position for the feature with Eric Cooley alongside. At the drop of the green flag Beard jumped to the race lead and never looked back, scoring the victory over Cooley, and Jamie Flanagan. Complete results from the program are available at www.NorthAlabamaSpeedway.com .

“I feel like we are getting this car finally figured out,” said Beard in victory lane. “We’ve struggled over the past month, but my team just keeps digging, and this win is for them.”

Ashley Newman entered a single event over the weekend in his Upton Motorsports #73 Greg’s Sawmill/Bob Pierce Crate Late Model, as he made the trip to Kentucky Lake Motor Speedway (Calvert City, Kentucky). Twenty-four Pro (Crate) Late Models registered for battle in the event, which posted a $4,000 winner's check. Ashley qualified thirteenth fastest overall during time trials, which positioned him starting fifth in the first heat. He went on to finish second behind Troy English in his heat race, earning him the fourth starting spot on the grid for the 35 lap finale. Newman moved into the second spot early in the race, and chased leader English for much of the event. As the laps wound down, the lead duo battled heavy lapped traffic. Newman used lapped traffic and a deflating right rear tire on English's machine to his advantage, making the pass for top spot entering turn three on the final circuit for the victory. English held on for second followed by Tait Davenport, Brent Lewis, and Jeff Walston. The victory marked Newman’s fourteenth of the season and the richest of his career. Full results from the event are available at www.KLMSLLC.com .

“I sure hated to see (Troy) English have bad luck there, but we will definitely take the win,” commented Ashley. “This is just a dream season that I’m having right now.”

It will be another busy weekend for the team as series point leader, Kyle Beard will enter a pair of $2,000-to-win, COMP Cams Super Dirt Series (CCSDS) at Diamond Park Speedway (Nashville, Arkansas) and I-30 Speedway (Little Rock, Arkansas), while Ashley Newman will take part in a weekly racing series event at Camden Speedway (Camden, Tennessee) on Saturday evening. Ricky Weiss Achieves Governor Status with Dacotah Win

Headingly, Manitoba, Canada (07/29/14) – Ricky Weiss entered a trio of events over the weekend with the WISSOTA Blaine Brothers Challenge Series in his #7 Derrick's Sandblasting/Bloomquist/ Pro Power Racing Engine Super Late Model and came away with his first career win with the tour as well as his tenth win of 2014.

Action began on Thursday evening at Brown County Speedway (Aberdeen, South Dakota). Twenty-nine WISSOTA Late Models registered for the event, and a tenth to fourth run in his heat race earned Ricky a spot in the evenings redraw. Weiss drew the second starting spot to lock into the outside-front-row for the feature alongside Donny Schatz. In the main event Weiss ran second for much of the race before falling back to fourth late in the event. He managed a third place finish in the final rundown behind race winner, Jeff Wildung, and Donny Schatz. David McDonald and Zach Johnson rounded out the top five finishers.

On Friday night action shifted to Dacotah Speedway (Mandan, South Dakota) for the annual North Dakota Governor's Cup, as twenty-nine entries converged on the oval. Ricky drew the eighth starting spot for his heat race, and despite starting in the back of the pack he advanced to a second place finish. In the redraw Weiss was the recipient of the sixth starting spot in the main event. During the course of the feature he raced his way up to the second spot when the caution flag waved with six laps remaining. On the restart Weiss slipped back to third where he would finish behind race winner, Zach Johnson, and John Kaanta. Jake Redetzke rounded out the top five finishers.

Round #2 of the Governor's Cup was contested on Saturday night, which saw Ricky snare his first ever victory with the Blaine Brothers Challenge Series. Weiss won his heat race from the pole position, then drew the outside-front-row starting spot alongside Zach Johnson for the $2,000-to-win finale. Weiss outdueled Johnson for the race lead at the drop of the green flag, but Johnson would not give up easily. Bell Set to Defend Belleville Midget Nationals Title after 17th Win of the Year!

Lonnie Wheatley, NORMAN, Okla. (July 28, 2014) – The Belleville Midget Nationals.

Those few words say it all, and it doesn’t get much bigger in Midget racing than that.  The powerful little cars hustling around the Belleville High Banks at breathtaking speeds, it’s the stuff of legend where past winners include the likes of current NASCAR stars Jeff Gordon and Kasey Kahne among others.

This weekend, 19-year-old Christopher Bell of Norman, OK, aims to become just the fourth repeat winner in the 37th running of the Belleville Midget Nationals in Belleville, KS, after capturing his first Belleville crown last year en route to the USAC National Midget title.

And he does it coming off an open-wheel racing world best 17th win of 2014 last Wednesday night when he scored the MOWA Speedweek opener victory in Highland, IL.

Along with the Belleville Midget Nationals this Thursday and Saturday, this week’s slate opens with USAC’s Kansas Midget Week kicking off Tuesday night at Solomon Valley Raceway in Beloit, KS, where Bell also won last year’s Chad McDaniel Memorial.

“It’s a fun little place, last year it rained some the night before and built up an awesome cushion,” Bell explained of the Solomon Valley Raceway.

From there, it’s on to the Belleville High Banks where Bell will also pilot the RPM/Gormly No. 99 in Friday night’s USAC Silver Crown event atop the ½-mile oval.

“They’re total opposite racetracks, we go from one of the smallest tracks we’ll race on to about the biggest and fastest we’ll see,” Bell explained of the difference between the Beloit and Belleville tracks.  “It’s good, we get some real diversity in tracks that way.”

The history surrounding the Belleville Midget Nationals isn’t lost on the youngster gunning for a second consecutive event win.  “It would be an honor to win it back-to-back, I don’t think that’s something that many guys have done.”

Indeed it isn’t, as only three drivers have gone back-to-back at Belleville including Stan Fox in 1979 and 1980, Kasey Kahne in 2000 and 2001 and most recently Bryan Clauson in 2009 and 2010.

This week’s events also offer up an opportunity for Bell to gain some ground on Keith Kunz Motorsports teammate Rico Abreu in the chase for the USAC National Midget championship.  “Something pretty major will have to happen to catch Rico at this point, all I can do is just take it race by race,” Bell commented of his pursuit for a second consecutive championship.

Bell comes off a rain-shortened weekend that included his 17th win of the year last Wednesday night before rallying from deep in the field after a Thursday heat race incident for another top-ten finish.

In Wednesday’s MOWA Speedweek opener for winged 410 Sprint Cars, Bell rallied from the tail of his heat to finish second before winning the Dash and then dominating the feature event in the Fox Brothers No. 53 Sprint Car for win number 17 of the year.

“The car was on rails, it was perfect,” Bell commented.

It looked like more of the same on Thursday night at Tri-City Speedway in Pontoon Beach, IL, with Bell slicing through his heat race field until the night got derailed when he got collected in a Brady Bacon flip.

Rebounding to win the “B” Main, Bell advanced from his 17th starting position to salvage a seventh-place finish.

“I passed all I could in about the first ten laps, then it locked down and we just rode around the rest of the way,” Bell commented.

With two more nights of winged 410 action set for the following two nights, Mother Nature dictated otherwise with rainouts at Jacksonville and Macon.

More winged 410 Sprint Car action is right around the corner though, with Bell taking the seat of Brandon Berryman’s No. 31b All-Pro Auto Reconditioning for Sunday night’s Third Annual Capitani Classic at Knoxville Raceway.

But first, there’s business to be taken care of at the High Banks.

2014 Quick Stats:  64 races, 17 wins, 33 top-fives, 42 top-tens.

Next Up:

Tuesday, Solomon Valley Raceway (Beloit, KS) – Kunz 67 Midget
