Swindell Focused on Recording Sixth Chili Bowl Nationals Title

Inside Line Promotions - GERMANTOWN, Tenn. (Jan. 9, 2017) - Sammy Swindell is out for vengeance at this year's 31st annual Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals Presented by General Tire.

Swindell has won the most events - five - and has earned the most Vacuworx Invitational Race of Champions wins - four - during the premier midget event inside the River Spirit Expo Center in Tulsa, Okla. However, he is looking to erase the sour memories from last year's event when he returns to the bullring this Tuesday for the Race of Champions before his preliminary night on Wednesday.

"It was disappointing last year," he said. "I got beat up a lot. We tore up a lot of stuff that normally doesn't happen. I felt like we had a good car, good enough to race and win; just the circumstances of being in the wrong place got us last year more than anything else."

Swindell is optimistic about his chances to claim his sixth title in a race car he only gets to drive once a year.

"Every time I've been in one I've been competitive," he said. "Not doing it a lot says something too I guess. Most of the time it's been a little bit of fun and something different. When you get to do something different, once a year, it has a little more fun to it."

Swindell was victorious at the prestigious event in 1989, 1992, 1996, 1998 and 2009.

"We built a new car for this year, but it's not much different," he said. "We wanted to improve on what's been working; things you learn from one year to the next. The dirt there changes and the way they do the track changes so we've had to do a few things over the years to be good."

Regardless of the result, Swindell said he enjoys the action, pressure and atmosphere of the event.

"All the different people that are there and people you don't race with but that one time a year, you roll it all together and it makes it special," he said. "It's fun to see some people we only get to see there each year. Hopefully this year we will get back to Victory Lane."

Baughman Set for Third Chili Bowl Nationals Start This Week

Inside Line Promotions - TULSA, Okla. (Jan. 9, 2017) - Josh Baughman recently found a ride for the 31st annual Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals Presented by General Tire.

Baughman will pilot the No. 3j owned by Jim Neuman as he tackles the premier midget event inside the River Spirit Expo Center for the third time. Baughman's preliminary night is slated for Thursday followed by the finale on Saturday.

"I wasn't going to do it and he messaged me asking if I'd be interesting," he said. "He caught me at the right time. I've been out of the car since October so I'm ready to race.

"The Chili Bowl is hard. It's a tough deal. You have to have a lot of luck on your side. For a winged guy going into a non-wing deal it's a tough transition."

Baughman improved his results during preliminary and finale action from his first to second Chili Bowl start and he's eager to show similar improvement this year.

"I've only been in a midget four or five times so it's a tough task," he said. "To make Saturday night's show, like a C Main, B Main or the A Main, would be a plus and not be in an early race come Saturday morning. It's so hard to do and you have to have everything go your way."

Baughman is coming off his career-best season when he picked up his first-ever 410ci winged sprint car win and his first Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour victory.

Bergman Venturing to 31st annual Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals

Inside Line Promotions - SHAWNEE, Okla. (Jan. 9, 2017) - Seth Bergman is heading to the 31st annual Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals Presented by General Tire this week.

"We didn't think we were going to run the Chili Bowl this year, but it all came together at the last minute," he said. "I'm excited to get back there. I haven't been able to run a midget very often, but I feel like we're getting better and I'm getting more comfortable each time we've hit the track the last couple of years."

Bergman, who is driving for A.J. Felker Racing for the third straight year, will compete inside the River Spirit Expo Center in Tulsa, Okla., on Tuesday during his preliminary night before the event concludes on Saturday.

Bergman won a heat race, placed sixth in a qualifier and ended fourth in a B Main to transfer into his preliminary night A Main last year. He picked up a handful of positions to post a 20th-place result. That relegated him to a D Main in the finale. Bergman was in contention to transfer to a C Main before a mechanical problem on the last lap resulted in a DNF.

He placed second in a heat race and won a qualifier before finishing ninth in the preliminary A Main in 2015. His event ended with a DNF in a B Main during the final night.

"The Chili Bowl takes a lot of luck, but you also have to be on point as a driver and have your car set up well," he said. "We've had strong moments each of the last two years and hopefully this year we'll string together a strong prelim night from start to finish to set ourselves up to make Saturday's A Main.

"I want to thank A.J. and his team for the opportunity. This is a fun event and I'm really looking forward to it."
