Wright Saves Best for Last; Wins Devil's Bowl Spring Nationals with Last Corner Heroics

Lonnie Wheatley, MESQUITE, Texas (March 15, 2008) – Gary Wright captured his first O'Reilly American Sprint Cars on Tour National series feature win of the season in the most dramatic of fashions, charging past an unsuspecting Tony Bruce, Jr., in the final corner to take the win in Devil's Bowl Speedway's 35th Annual Spring Nationals 25-lap finale on Saturday night.

Denying Bruce a sweep of the weekend's action, Wright brought the crowd to its feet with the electrifying victory as he collected his second career Devil's Bowl Spring Nationals title and the first since 1995.

"This place has been awful good to us over the years," Wright commented after his 17th career ASCS National Tour feature win atop the Devil's Bowl ½-mile clay oval.  "I knew if I could get close enough that I could get him, we were way better in three and four.  That lapped car let us close up and then when he went into three up high, I knew we had him."

Most of the way, however, it appeared that Liberal, KS, shoe Bruce was going to collect his second victory in as many nights after snaring his first career ASCS National Tour win in Friday night's preliminary.

The wild card that nearly foiled the plans of both Bruce and Wright was 15-year-old Trey Robb, who paced three mid-race laps before going up in smoke and coasting to a stop in the infield.

Seemingly living a charmed life, Bruce drew the pole position for the main event with Robb drawing the front row outside after ranking second in the night's passing points to become eligible for the night's redraw that included Friday night's top four finishers and Saturday's top two point-earners.

While Bruce and Robb led the feature field to the green flag, Wright gridded the field outside the third row after pulling the "6" pill.

The feature ran off in rapid-fire fashion, with all 25 laps running uninterrupted after the initial start was waved off for Garry Lee Maier's turn one loop, with Matt Covington retiring to the pit area before the restart.

Bruce gunned into the lead at the outset and paced the early laps in front of Robb, with fifth-starter Kevin Ramey battling into third in front of second-row starters Wayne Johnson and Jason Sides in the early rounds.

Bruce held a ten car-length lead until reaching the tail of the field, with Robb quickly closing the gap aboard the Swofford Electric No. 1s entry.  Robb reeled in Bruce and charged into the lead on the tenth lap and set sail.  But the 15-year-old's first ASCS National Tour win was not to be on this night, as his engine expired two laps later.

Meanwhile, Wright had been methodically working his way forward aboard the Wright-Cooper Motorsports Wesmar-powered Richwood Construction/Whiteco Commercial Funding No. 9 Maxim.  Wright made his way past Sides for fifth by the fifth lap, then worked by Wayne Johnson for fourth by the tenth lap.

Wright then battled past 2006 Spring Nationals champ Kevin Ramey and found himself in second behind Bruce moments later when Robb retired to the infield.

Wright tried to close in on Bruce on several occasions, but each time Bruce responded by slipping away to a ten car-length edge aboard the Kistler-powered Best Well Service No. 18 Maxim.

"The Texan" began erasing that advantage with two laps to go and closed in on Bruce's rear bumper entering turn one on the final lap.  Bruce led the way down the backstretch with Wright in hot pursuit.

And when Bruce went to the top side of turns three and four with the checkered flag awaiting, Wright drove to the low side and powered by to snare his 120th career ASCS National Tour win.

Bruce settled for second, while Jason Sides took the show position.  Wayne Johnson crossed the stripe fourth in the Wesmar-powered H&H Enterprises No. 94 Maxim, with Zach Chappell climbing from 13th to round out the top five in his No. 50z machine.

Sam Hafertepe, Jr., claimed sixth, with Jason Johnson racing from 19th to post his second seventh-place finish in as many nights.  Ramey slipped to eighth over the final half of the race, with Travis Rilat and Kenneth Walker completing the top ten.

Ramey, Walker, Hafertepe, Ryan Roberts, Robb and Covington topped heat race action, with Don Young, Scott Winters and Jason Johnson winning the "B" Mains.

Lorne Wofford flipped on the opening lap of the third heat race but was able to return for "B" Main action.  Defending Devil's Bowl Spring Nationals champion Jake Peters was involved in the same incident.  Also able to return for "B" Main competition, Peters missed the cut for the feature event.

Wayne Reutimann, Jr. scores win in O'Reilly USCS season-opener at Watermelon
Capital Speedway

Cordele, GA - March 15, 2008 - 2005 O'Reilly United Sprint Car Series
Asphalt Thunder Tour Champion, Wayne Reutimann, Jr. from  Zephyrhills,
Florida won the 35-Lap O'Reilly USCS Asphalt Thunder Tour season-opener at
Watermelon Capital Speedway in Cordele, Georgia on Saturday night.  The win
was his sixth career O'Reilly USCS feature win.

Reutimann, Jr. started the evening by qualifying second fastest in the CnB
Mushroom Farms Time Trials after Danny Martin, Jr. from Sarasota, Florida
set fast time of 14.04 seconds around high-banked 4/10ths mile paved D
Shaped tri-oval.  After the qualifying heat races, Martin drew a zero
inversion in the K&N Filters pole Award drawing place himself and Wayne
Reutimann, Jr. on the front row for the start of the main event.

When the green flag flew for the start of the 35-lap feature, Martin led the
pack down to turn one with Reutimann, Jr. beside him battling for supremacy
through the first turn. As the pair exited turn two Reutimann, Jr. grabbed
the lead and charged ahead. At the same time, Keith Butler from Riverview,
Florida, who started sixth, charged past the first two rows into the second
position on lap-one with Martin, open-wheel legend Wayne Reutimann, Sr. from
Zephyrhills, Florida, Terry Gray, Shane Butler, English road-racing
transplant Adam Jackson from Timmonsville, South Carolina and Wendy Mathis
from Tampa, Florida behind them in the lead pack.

The race went green at a torrid pace for the first twenty-six laps before
the first of two caution flags flew for Keith Butler's spin-out when his
left rear tire went down. This bunched the field with Martin, Jr. behind
Reutimann, Jr.  When the starter waved the green again, Reutimann, Jr. once
again was in control with Martin chasing him hard from the runner-up spot
followed by the senior Reutimann in third place. Gray and Shane Butler were
waging a torrid battle for the fourth position with nine laps to go.

On the final lap Shane Butler looped his car in turn three. The field
restarted with Reutimann, Jr. on the point for a green-white-checkered
finish. For the third time the Reutimann, Jr. held off Martin and Reutimann,
Sr. for the win racing the final two laps into victory lane. Martin
collected the runner-pay followed by Wayne Reutimann, Sr. in the second Team
Reutimann entry. Terry Gray drove home fourth and Wendy Mathis rounded out
the top five positions. Rookie driver Adam Jackson crossed the finish-line
in the fifth position and then failed to report to the scales before going
to his pits first and suffered a penalty for it.

Defending series champion Terry Gray from Bartlett, Tennessee who qualified
fourth fastest and started fourth in the Lucas Oil Power Dash raced to
victory in that six car shootout. Shane Butler from Bushnell, Florida raced
from outside the front row in the Engler Machine and Tool First Heat Race to
the win. Keith Butler, from Riverview, Florida then also raced from outside
the front row the front row in the Butlerbuilt Second Heat Race to the
victory 8 laps later as well.

The Huggins Cams Hardcharger Award went to Wendy Mathis. Danny Martin, Jr.
was awarded the Hoosier Tire Young Gun of the Race (for the highest
finishing driver under 25 years old). Wayne Reutimann, Jr. additionally
earned the JE Pistons Top Guns award. Danny Martin, Jr. was also the K&N
Filters Pole Award recipient. Adam Jackson garnered the FSR Products Rookie
of the Race award.

Strong Runs for World of Outlaws Drivers at Spring Nationals
Concord, NC— March 16, 2008--By: Tony Veneziano, World of Outlaws PR Director

The finale of the 35th Annual Spring Nationals at Devil’s Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, Texas on Saturday night saw three Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series drivers finish in the Top-Six, led by a runner-up finish for Tony Bruce Jr.

Bruce, who won on the opening night of the event, led 21 total laps and was inched out at the line by veteran Gary Wright on the last lap. The native of Liberal, Kansas, who was locked into the A-Feature on Saturday night by virtue of his win on Friday night, drew the pole position for the 25-lap finale and charged to the lead at the drop of the green flag.

For Bruce, the victory on Friday night was the first of his career with the American Sprint Car Series on Tour, National Tour.

Sides earned his second consecutive third-place finish at the half-mile on Saturday night. Like Bruce, he was locked into the A-Feature by virtue of his finish on Friday night and thus did not have to take part in a heat race.

Sam Hafertepe Jr., who is in his second full season with the Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series this season was sixth on Saturday night, improving on his 10th place run in the opener of the Spring Nationals. The native of Sunnyvale, Texas won the third of six heat races.

Headquartered in Roanoke, Va., Advance Auto Parts is the second-largest retailer of automotive aftermarket parts, accessories, batteries, and maintenance items in the United States, based on store count and sales. As of October 6, 2007, the company operated 3,228 stores in 40 states, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. The company serves both the do-it-yourself and professional installer markets.

O'Reilly ASCoT Ready for State Fair Speedway's Spring Nationals

Lonnie Wheatley, TULSA, Okla. (March 17, 2008) – Two more nights of Spring Nationals racing action is in store for the O'Reilly American Sprint Cars on Tour National series this weekend as the series takes to Oklahoma City's 3/8-mile State Fair Speedway clay oval on Friday and Saturday night.

After 55 different drivers competed in this past weekend's Spring Nationals at Lanny Edwards' Devil's Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, TX, it's three hours north on I-35 to State Fair Speedway, where Oklahoma City native Wayne Johnson reigns as the defending State Fair Speedway Spring Nationals champion.

And with five different winners through the opening five nights of action for the ASCS National Tour, Johnson will be looking for his first feature score over the weekend.

The series opened the 2008 campaign with Kenny Adams, Terry McCarl and Jason Johnson each earning wins at Tampa's East Bay Raceway Park.  Then, over this past weekend, Tony Bruce, Jr., posted his first career series win before Gary Wright used a last corner pass to claim his first Devil's Bowl Spring Nationals victory since 1995.

With his first series win of the year and 120th of his career, Wright of Hooks, TX, enters this weekend's State Fair Speedway Spring Nationals with a 28-point advantage as he chases down a fifth consecutive $50,000 series championship.

"The Texan" has finished no lower than third in this year's five feature events and carries a series record string of 18 consecutive top-five feature finishes into the weekend aboard the Wesmar-powered Richwood Construction/Whiteco Commercial Funding No. 9 Maxim.  Wright topped three of four ASCS National Tour feature events at State Fair Speedway last year.

Although shut out of ASCS victory lane thus far in 2008, a pair of fourth-place finishes at Devil's Bowl propelled 2000 ASCS National champion Wayne Johnson up to second in points aboard Mike Hammers' Wesmar-powered H&H Enterprises No. 94 Maxim.  The Oklahoma City native that now resides in Knoxville, IA, guns for his first win of the season after finishing third in series' points in 2007.

Tennessee's Jason Sides enters the weekend ranked third in points and is expected to contend for his first win of the year along with past ASCS National champion Zach Chappell of Talala, OK, and Eunice, Louisiana's Jason Johnson, who enter the weekend ranked fourth and fifth, respectively.  Zach Chappell won an ASCS Speedweek event at State Fair Speedway in 2001, while Jason Johnson won three of four series feature events in Oklahoma City in 2006 including a sweep of the Spring Nationals.

Other top series contenders expected for the weekend include past champions Travis Rilat (Forney, TX) and Garry Lee Maier (Cimarron, KS) along with the Brodix Rookie of the Year crop including Eric Baldaccini (Keller, TX), Don Droud, Jr. (Lincoln, NE), Kathryne Minter (Bedford, TX), Kenneth Walker (Claremore, OK) and Gary Taylor (Sapulpa, OK).

A host of other top contenders from throughout the nation including the likes of 2005 ASCoT Rookie of the Year Nick Smith, 2006 ASCoT Rookie of the Year Foster Landon, defending ASCS Sooner Region champion Brian McClelland, defending ASCS Midwest Region champion Natalie Sather, Missouri's Brian Brown and Nebraska's Billy Alley and Jack Dover will be on hand for the weekend's action as well, with approximately 50 entries expected to fill the pit area.

Inaugural ASCS Southwest Region Event Saturday Night at USA Race Park!

Lonnie Wheatley, TULSA, Okla. (March 17, 2008) – A new chapter in the American Sprint Car Series history books springs to life this Saturday night when the ASCS Southwest Region contests its inaugural event at Tucson's United Sports Arizona Race Park.

Saturday's event at USA Race Park will mark the first winged Sprint Car event in Arizona for the American Sprint Car Series, as the ASCS Southwest Region opens up a full slate of 18 events for the winged warriors of Arizona.

The ASCS Southwest Region is one of two new Regions for the American Sprint Car Series in 2008.  The series also added the ASCS Northwest Region, based out of Washington and Oregon, for the 2008 season, thus giving the ASCS an undeniable National presence from coast-to-coast with events taking place from Florida to New York and from New York to Washington State.

With winged Sprint Car racing historically strong throughout the Southwestern portion of the nation, that segment of the sport is expected to thrive under the direction of the new ASCS Southwest Region in 2008 and well into the future.

Saturday's inaugural American Sprint Car Series Southwest Region event at Tucson's USA Race Park is slated to go green at 6:30 p.m.

United Sports Arizona Race Park is located east of Tucson off I-10 Exit 268, then 1.6 mile south on Craycroft Road, which turns into Los Reales.  For more information, contact the track at 520-574-8515.

The ASCS Southwest Region is set for 18 nights of winged Sprint Car racing throughout Arizona in 2008.  In addition to events at Tucson's USA Race Park, the series will also be in action at Show Low's Thunder Speedway and Manzanita Speedway in Phoenix.

The nation's most prominent Sprint Car sanctioning body with 14 different Regions throughout the United States in addition to the O'Reilly American Sprint Cars on Tour National series, the American Sprint Car Series' (ASCS) 17th year of activity will include approximately 250 nights of racing at more than 100 different race tracks throughout 28 different states and Canada.

Sherman Shoots for Two ASCS Canyon Wins in a Row Saturday at Manzy

Lonnie Wheatley, TULSA, Okla. (March 17, 2008) – Night number two of the 2008 season for the Discount Tire Co. ASCS Canyon Region unfolds this Saturday night as the series takes to Manzanita Speedway's 1/3-mile clay oval in Phoenix, AZ.

Defending series champion Jeremy Sherman of Surprise, AZ, kicked the 2008 campaign precisely the same way he began last year's championship effort; with a win in the recent season opener.  And he'll try to make it two wins in a row to open the season after posting a dozen ASCS Canyon Region wins in 2007.

"The Shermanator" raced from seventh to win the series season opener on Saturday night, March 8, to break out to an early lead as he opens his title defense aboard Fred Bryan's Wesmar-powered F&E Development No. 77 Maxim.
