ASCS Gulf South Region Kicks Off 2008 Season This Weekend!
Lonnie Wheatley, TULSA, Okla. (February 25, 2008) – The American Sprint Car Series Gulf South Region kicks off its seventh season of racing action in top style with a premium doubleheader of racing action in Southeast Texas this weekend.
One driver could get the 2008 season under way on a strong note by collecting as much as $5,000 with a sweep of the weekend's feature events. Simply making the "A" Feature events on both nights will net a driver $700.
On Friday night, the ASCS Gulf South Region opens the season at the newly renamed Golden Triangle Raceway Park in Beaumont, TX, for the "Prelude to the Gulf Coast Nationals". Friday night's feature event atop the high-banked, ¼-mile, gumbo clay oval known in recent years as Motorama Speedway will mark the 100th feature event in ASCS Gulf South history and offers up $2,000 to the winner with $300 to start.
Then on Saturday night, the series moves on to Houston Raceway Park in Baytown, TX, for the Inaugural Gulf Coast Sprint Car Nationals. Saturday night's 24-car main event features a $3,000 winner's share with $400 just to start the finale.
Brandon Berryman of Missouri City, TX, reigns as the defending ASCS Gulf South champion after edging Skip Wilson of Mesquite, TX, by just ten points for the 2007 title to become the fifth different champion in series history.
Along his way to the title, Berryman picked off four feature wins, including single triumphs at both the Golden Triangle and Houston Raceway Park ovals.
Berryman and Wilson will be joined by other top ASCS Gulf South Regional contenders including the likes of 2006 series champion Gary Watson, who finished just 20 points behind Berryman in third last year, three-time ASCS Gulf South Region points runner-up Greg Rilat and Chris Sweeney among others.
And, with the enticing combination of added purse money and the early-season timing of the event, a number of invaders are expected as well with Springfield, Nebraska's Jack Dover among the out-of-state hotshoes that will try to take the top money out of Texas.
Friday's action at Golden Triangle Raceway Park fires off at 8:00 p.m., while Saturday's card at Houston Raceway Park goes green at 7:00 p.m.
Motorama Speedway is located 9.5 miles west of I-10 on US 90 (College St.). For more information, contact the track at 409-752-7200.

Rich Vleck, TULSA, Okla., (February 25, 2008)- It’s that time of the year again when the Northeast comes together in Syracuse to prepare for the racing season ahead, and once again the ASCS Patriot Region has five top teams ready for showcase at the 2008 Motorsports Expo.
Five Patriot cars will once again have prominent representation at the Cargill Exhibit Center from March 7-9 at the New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse. This year the cast includes four cars that have been on display in the past and one that will be at the Motorsports Expo for the first time but be on display for the Patriots for the second time in a month.
Throughout the weekend, thousands of schedule cards and posters will be distributed, along with the debut of the all-new “Fans Win Too” promotion t-shirts. Drivers will also be available for autographs on Saturday, keeping with the tradition of the Patriot Sprints being a main component of this yearly kickoff party.
Here are the five cars that will adorn the ASCS Patriot section this year:
No. 45, Chuck Hebing. The two-time defending ASCS Patriot Champion is unsure which car he will have on display this year around, but you know it will be sure to turn eyes. “The Cobra” from Ontario, NY will be driving for Ohsweken’s Glenn Styres at times this year and may display that car this time around.
No. 35, Jared Zimbardi. The 2007 runner-up busted out with three thrilling victories over Chuck Hebing. The Little Valley, NY youngster turns to a Treviscraft mount this year and will have the car on display not only in Syracuse, but the week before as well at the Olean (NY) Center Mall Car Show.
No. 51, Bryan Howland. The 2005 Patriot Champ was forced to miss some races last year but will be back with a vengeance this season. The Auburn, NY hot shoe is known for having one of the classiest and best appearing cars year-in and year-out and this year will be no different.
No. 52, Scott Kreutter. At Motorsports Expo 2007, Kreutter did not even have an engine in his car, but when it was time to get down to business he was a consummate factor, including a pair for runner-up finishes en route to running away with Rookie of the Year honors.
No. 11, Robbie Shuttleworth. His Uncle Chris had a car, also numbered 11, in the Patriot booth last year, this year it is one of the Insinger Rookie of the Year Candidates that will have his Shuttleworth Asphalt Sealing car on display. At the beginning of February, Robbie was on display at the Rochester Motorsports Show and dazzled patrons with his flashy white and green scheme.
For the second straight year, the Patriots will align their booth with the Central New York Mini Sprints to showcase the varieties of open wheel action that will be provided across the Northeast in 2008. Show times are scheduled for 5:00-10:00 p.m. on Friday March 7, 11:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m. on Saturday and 11:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. on Sunday. For more information, please visit www.GaterNews.com.
