Lucas Oil ASCS title chase resumes at the Devil’s Bowl

Bryan Hulbert - TULSA, Okla. (October 10, 2013) With time off for teams to regroup before making the final run to the 2013 season finale at the in Yuma, Ariz. the season’s final ten dates will stretch across Texas, Arkansas, New Mexico, and Arizona beginning Friday, October 18 and Saturday, October 19 at the historic Devil’s Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, Texas.

The 40th time the Winter Nationals will be contested at the historic half-mile, the October meeting will be the seventy-fifth and seventy-sixth time the Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series presented by MAVTV American Real has visited the Texas oval.

Jason Johnson and Johnny Herrera’s battle for the season ending $60,000 check has exchanged hands five times. Retaking the point after a runner up finish at the Salina Highbanks Speedway in Salina, Okla. on August 17, the three time series champion has been able to open his advantage to as much as 72 markers before giving up 20 points to Johnny Herrera after the driver of the MVT No. 45x scooped up his fourth triumph of 2013 in the rain delayed Hockett/McMillin Memorial at Lucas Oil Speedway on Sunday, August 29.
Johnson with ten wins to his credit at the Mesquite oval, and Herrera with two in Lucas Oil ASCS presented by MAVTV American Real competition is no guarantee that either will take home the Winter National title as Jeff Swindell enters as the defending champion of the two day affair. Swindell completed the 2012 sweep with a closing lap pass on Danny Lasoski in the H&H/Pearson Farms No. 94.
With five wins on the season, Swindell has posted a season leading 14 podium finishes. Having had a season comparable to a roller-coaster ride, Swindell now finds his points position threatened by Brad Loyet who trails the crafty veteran by nine markers.

Posting a pair of wins in 2013, Loyet is second to Jason Johnson in Top 10 finishes with 30 to his credit. Couple that with 16 Top Five appearances and eight podiums, Loyet stands ready to grace the podium.
After trading fifth with Logan Forler off and on throughout the season, Tony Bruce, Jr. holds an 88 point buffer over the Forler Trucking No. 2L. Picking up the preliminary night of the Hockett/McMillin Memorial, Bruce’s second victory of the season marked his sixth podium appearance of the season, quickly followed by his seventh after the Inside Line Promotions No. 18 placed third on the Sunday finale.
Forler’s eleventh Top 5 of the season was dashed after slower traffic tangled with the Arizona driver at Lucas Oil Speedway. Relegating the No. 2L to an eleventh place showing, time off from the road has served Forler well, taking the win at the Arizona Speedway against the Hose Advantage Store Southwest Region.

Seth Bergman leads the ASCS Nation in A-Feature starts in 2013 with 48 starts between National and Regional nights. With a single National Tour win on the season, the Washington native has posted 21 Top 10 finishes. Dustin Morgan holds eighth in tour standings with Cole Wood ninth. The California driver has already solidified himself as the 2013 Brodix Rookie of the Year. Brandon Hahn and Shawn Petersen were the other drivers vying for that title. Hahn is on track to finish his year tenth in tour standings after Petersen fell out due to a back injury suffered on May 17.

The 40th Devil’s Bowl Winter Nationals on Friday, October 18 and Saturday, October 19 will begin at 8:00 P.M. (CT) both nights. Grandstands open at 6:00 P.M. with Pit Gates open at 2:00 P.M.

Support classes for the weekend include Blaine’s USA Limited Modifieds both nights. Saturday will see the addition of DGS RaceSaver 305cid Sprint Cars.
