Weekend Rewind: American Sprint Car Series

TULSA, Okla. (June 30, 2014) - Out with June, and in with July as the Regions of the American Sprint Car Series take center stage in this week's review of action across the ASCS Nation with six events taking place in ASCS 360cid and 305cid competition across five states.

A total of 101 drivers took part in both ASCS 305cid and 360cid events over the weekend in Arizona, California, Kansas, New Mexico, and Texas. To date, 76 races have been contested in 90 sanctioned events. Overall, 416 drivers have taken part in at least one ASCS sanctioned event in 2014.

The Winners:

Friday, June 27, 2014

• Rick Ziehl (West Texas 305) - Taking a quick jog to west Texas, Rick Ziehl topped the field at the El Paso Speedway Park before heading to Tucson for the ASCS Southwest Region on Saturday night where the Las Cruces, N.M. native ran from seventeenth to second.

Saturday, June 28, 2014

• C.J. Johnson (ASCS Sooner) - The 6th annual Steve King Memorial took place at the Dodge City Raceway Park and found a new champion with C.J. Johnson capturing his first American Bank of Oklahoma ASCS Sooner Region victory in the ASCS/NCRA showdown.

• Lorne Wofford (West Texas 305) - The last time Lorne Wofford hit the clay of the Southern New Mexico Speedway, it was with every corner of the car. This time however, it was four tires planted in victory lane at the Las Cruces oval.

• Bob Ream, Jr. (ASCS Southwest) - The former non-wing ace led start to finish at the Tucson International Raceway on Saturday night for his second ASCS score of the season. Ream joins Rico Abreu as the only other repeat winner so far this season with the ASCS Southwest Region.

Sunday, June 29, 2014

• Kyle Hirst (ASCS Northwest) - The kick off to the ASCS Northwest Regional Speedweek, California's Kyle Hirst represented his home state well at Yreka's Siskiyou Motor Speedway with his third overall ASCS Northwest Region win.

• Aaron Reutzel (ASCS Sooner) - Round two of the ASCS Sooner / NCRA showdown, Aaron Reutzel scored the win for ASCS, leading every lap of the A-Feature at the 81 Speedway in Park City, Kan. for the Texas driver's sixth overall victory of 2014.

Notes on the Weekend:

• Overcoming Adversity - Rick Ziehl's night at Tucson did not start well. After the sun blinded the reigning ASCS Southwest Regional Champion during Hot Laps, causing the No. 20z to strike an infield tire and flip, his Heat Race saw a fourth place finished stripped due to a missing muffler. Putting Ziehl at the tail of the field, "The Real Deal" was that indeed as Ziehl tore through the field to finish second.

• More Adversity - Speaking of overcoming adversity, Jack Dover comes to mind with his performance at 81 Speedway on Sunday. Pulling in from his Heat Race early due to an overheating engine, Dover changed from fourteenth in the B-Main to second, then clawed his way to sixth from sixteenth in the A-Feature.

• First Win - The ASCS Sooner / NCRA Showdown over the weekend ended in a draw, but C.J. Johnson did score his first victory against the ASCS Sooner Region at the Dodge City Raceway Park.

• Picking up Speed - Moving from 305cid to 360cid competition presents several challenges for a young driver. For Jordan Weaver, those challenges seem to be paying off as the young lady posted her first top-five of the season in ASCS competition on Saturday at the Dodge City Raceway Park then placed eighth on Sunday at 81 Speedway.

• Hard Chargers - We've already talked about Rick Ziehl and Jack Dover, but other Hard Chargers from the weekend include Garen Linder who ran eighth to fourth in the B-Main, then twentieth to tenth at Siskiyou Motor Speedway. Luke Cranston went from fourteenth to sixth at Dodge City and Tony Bruce, Jr. climbed from eighth to fourth at 81 Speedway.

• New Northwest Leader - Vern Wheeler, Jr. entered the weekend with a slim lead in the ASCS Northwest Region, but a hard crash during Hot Laps in Yreka, Ca. ended his night early; dropping the Oregon driver to fifth in Regional standings, and moving Colin Baker to the point after a fourth place finish on Sunday night.
