Lucas Oil ASCS ready for Gulf South showdown

Bryan Hulbert - TULSA, Okla. (April 1, 2013) The toughest part of running the Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series presented by MAVTV American Real is often not the other national drivers. More times than not, it is the regional competition that make up the ASCS nation.

As pointed out in an interview with Brad Loyet earlier this year, the regional competition is not above giving the national divers a run for their money, “When you think about it, yeah we’ve got the same National guys that we contend with every week in and week out and we’re all capable of winning every single night, but biggest thing a lot of people forget about is the Regional competition we race against is all really tough too.”

Loyet expanded on the Regional competition by saying, “We kind of race on their home turf, and these guys race at these same racetracks all year long and they already know what they need to do.”
Billed as the Gulf South Showdown, the Lucas Oil ASCS presented by MAVTV American Real will make their lone appearance with the Griffith Truck and Equipment Gulf South Region on Friday, April 5 at the Golden Triangle Raceway Park in Beaumont, Texas.

In the series 2012 appearance at the three-eighths mile high banked oval, the day was ruled early on by Gulf South regular Travis Elliot before problems late in the race earned the Alvin, Texas driver a DNF for the evening. Ultimately it was Wayne Johnson who charged from twelfth to capture his first of ten wins on the season.

Scheduled from Friday, April 5, the 2013 edition will be the fifth time the Lucas Oil ASCS presented by MAVTV American Real has appeared at the Golden Triangle Raceway Park, formally known at Speedway 90. By the numbers four showings has yielded four winners with Zach Chappell (4/5/02), Tim Crawley (9/27/02), Michael Dupuy (9/28/02) finally Wayne Johnson in April, 2012.

Heading into the April 5 event, Jason Johnson leads the Lucas Oil ASCS presented by MAVTV American Real point standings with Johnny Herrera following 40 points behind. Jeff Swindell made the biggest move following events the Devil’s Bowl Speedway, coming from ninth to fourth in the tour standings.

Tony Bruce, Jr. rides fifth with Seth Bergman sixth. Brad Loyet has climbed to eighth followed by Logan Forler making up the National drivers in the top ten in driver points. Drivers who plan on running a limited National schedule who remain the top ten include Lucas Wolfe who holds third, Brian Brown in seventh, and Roger Crockett who holds tenth.

On the Gulf South Region side, Ray Allen Kulhanek and Aaron Reutzel each have wins on the season with Kulhanek’s coming at the Golden Triangle Raceway Park on March 1 ahead of Sam Hafertepe, Jr. and Tommy Bryant.

Kulhanek currently holds an advantage of 10 points over Aaron Reutzel with Channin Tankersley, Tommy Bryant, and John Carney II making up the current top five in regional standings.
Events at the Golden Triangle Raceway Park will include Hobby/Street Stocks, Limited Modifieds, Mini Sprints, and Dwarf Cars.

Southwest Region carries on into Tucson
Bryan Hulbert - TULSA, Okla. (April 1, 2013) The Hose Advantage Store Southwest Region heads into their sixth event of the 2013 season this Saturday, April 6 as the series returns to the Tucson International Raceway in Tucson, Ariz.

After five rounds of competition, Ziehl maintains his points lead by 53 markers over Lance Norick who raced to a runner up finish this past Saturday at the Arizona Speedway. Billy Chester holds the final step on the podium for the moment 68 points behind Ziehl.

As regional points are tallied based off the highest finishing regional drivers in a National Tour event, Ziehl has been able to maintain his points lead having made the A-Feature in the first four events of the season that were paired with the National Tour.

Thus far in 2013, Brian Brown, Roger Crockett, Jason Johnson, and most recently Logan Forler have Southwest Region triumphs. Forler’s trip to the Arizona Speedway was a test and tune for the Lake Havasu City, Ariz. to narrow down engine woes. A faulty magneto was discovered and allowed Forler to become the fourth winner in five events.

Named the “6 for the 6th”, events at the Tucson International Raceway will include six classes as the Hose Advantage Store Southwest Region is joined by the X-Mods, Super Stocks, Factory Stocks, Mod Lites, and Hornets.

Speedway Motors Midwest Region lights up at I-80 Speedway

Bryan Hulbert - TULSA, Okla. (April 1, 2013) After a long Midwest winter, the coming of Spring signals the start of dirt track racing in the Midwest and with it, the start of the 2013 Speedway Motors Midwest Region season.

Marking the ninth season for the Speedway Motors backed region, the 2013 opener will be the two-day Tighton Tools Spring Meltdown at the four-tenths mile I-80 Speedway in Greenwood, Neb on Friday, April 5 and Saturday, April 6 with practice on Thursday, April 4.

A favorite of the Midwest drivers, the I-80 Speedway will offer a $2,500 payday to the winner each night and will combine the Speedway Motors Midwest Region with the CBC/MLRA Super Late Models and well as varied classes of Modifieds with B-Mods Friday and A-Mods on Saturday.

Jack Dover enters the 2013 season as the defending champion of the Speedway Motors Midwest Region. The 2012 season was Dover’s third Midwest triumph, and second consecutive title ahead of Jordan Boston.

Going into a track that has both rewarded and punished the Springfield driver, Dover’s final win of the 2012 season that clinched his third title came at the I-80 Speedway on night one of the Fall Brawl. Earlier that season however, a horrific crash at the I-80 Speedway ended Dover’s Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour bid and resulted in his returning to the Midwest Region.  Dover will again utilize Roush/Yates power inside an Eagle Motorsports Chassis.

Looking forward to the opening weekend, Thursday’s practice will be held from 6:00 P.M. to 9:30 P.M. All drivers are advised to provide their own push vehicle. Practice will be $20 for drivers and $10 for all others. The grandstands will be open with free admission but with limited, if no, facilities available.

Friday, April 5 and Saturday, April 6 admission will be $22 each night with kids 6-12 years of age admitted for $5. Kids 5 years and younger will be allowed into the grandstands for free.

Start times from the Tighton Tools Spring Meltdown will see Friday’s card beginning at 7:15 P.M. with gates opening at 5:30 P.M. Saturday’s time will see a start time of 5:55 P.M. with gates opening at 4:30 P.M.
