MCCOY TAKES OVAL KART AND WINS TWICE IN BOONVILLE STREET RACE
BOONVILLE, Miss. – Team Full Throttle NASCAR Driver Development racer Houston McCoy has run a limited schedule to start his 2008 karting campaign, but when he does race he makes sure it counts. McCoy won both the Stock Light and Medium classes Saturday in the Boonville, Miss. Downtown Kart Race. Both races were eight laps in length on the half-mile six-turn street course.
“We had a great day,” McCoy said. “We brought our oval-track kart with the left-side offset and didn’t change anything but the tires. The thing [kart] gets around a road course pretty good too.”
McCoy started fourth in the Light class and third in Medium. It took him about half the race to work his way up to the lead in Light, while he convincingly garnered the top position in Medium by the end of the second lap.
“Both races were actually pretty close. Bobby [Lane] was right on our tail in both races. He’s a former [WKA] Gold Cup champion so it felt pretty good to be able to run with him. We’re all real happy with the way the day turned out.”
McCoy, 15, will race again this Saturday in a Mississippi Karting Association event in Jackson, Miss.
McCoy plans on this being his final season racing karts. He is anticipating a move to legends cars in 2009.
