| The Mississippi State Championship
Challenge Series
The Mississippi State Championship Challenge Series (MSCCS) evolved
due to the vision of Charles and Jannie Thrash gathering the state's
promoters together to offer the region's Super Late Model drivers
the opportunity to run for the Mississippi State Championship title
and a reasonable points fund. The "State Series" as it
has been commonly referred to has evolved from the holiday weekend
tripleheaders that were common place in the early and mid nineties
in which drivers such as Rick Rickman were champions along with
Johnny Stokes and then the dominant Mike Boland.
The MSCCS became a reality in 2001 as a single set of rules were
employed and the Super Late Model explosion was underway in the
state of Mississippi. Promoter and driver cooperation along with
the onset of the Spec motor revolution, common rules, and general
cooperation laid the initial foundation for the prosperous environment
in place for the 2004 season. A more structured and organized tour
is in place for drivers and fans alike as 2004 is the coming out
party for what will soon be known as the best regional touring series
in America.
The 2004 season should provide for perhaps the best season for
the Super Late Model racers in the state of Mississippi and Border
States. More than 20 races are scheduled for the drivers and a minimum
guaranteed championship amount of $10,000 in place along with paying
10 places for the series and a Rookie of the Year program as well.
A common format awaits the drivers at all events and the fans should
expect to see the hardest driving Super Late Model drivers in the
nation racing like no others when the Mississippi State Championship
Challenge Series thunders into a track near you.
The 2004 MSCCS tour will visit tracks including Jackson Motor Speedway,
Queen City Speedway, Columbus Speedway, Southern Speedway (formerly
Hattiesburg Speedway) in Hattiesburg, Simpson County Motorsports
Park, South Mississippi Speedway, and the SUPR/MSCCS Challenge will
be held this year at Baton Rouge Speedway. Needless to say it should
be an exciting season for all involved.
A quick review on the 2003 Mississippi State Championship Challenge
season saw Clinton, Mississippi's Scott Slay coming out on top of
the title chase after the 16-race season and earning the title of
2003 Mississippi State Champion. Slay took home a substantial sum
of $10,900 for his championship efforts and the prestigious title
making for possibly one of the most lucrative payoffs of any regional
tour in the country, especially for only 16 events within one state.
Slay had an excellent 2003 season with 3 wins on the MSCC season
in the Horace Slay Auto Sales sponsored GRT Jay Dickens powered
mount on American Race Tires.
Jackson area race Dennis Duncan finished a close second behind
Slay with a rock solid performance all year long with the veteran
taking one win as well. Byram's Richey Cauthen was third in the
final points with one win to his credit as well. The "Ragin'
Rebel" David Breazeale from Four Corners finished fourth with
Breazeale racking up the win in the season finale' at Jackson Motor
Speedway. Hard charging Darin Dorsey rounded out the top five as
the Pearl based driver had a competitive season.
Completing the top ten in points were Jimmy Cliburn followed by
David Gentry and Jason Cliburn in eighth. Perennial Champion Mike
Boland competed on a part time basis yet still earned 3 wins and
finished ninth in points with Jackson's Marty Hardy breaking into
the win column this year and finishing tenth. Special recognition
goes to David Molpus who finished 12th and Brock Wester who finished
13th as both of the Jackson area racers had perfect attendance on
the MSCC trail during the 2003 season.
The Mississippi State Champion Challenge continues to grow as witnessed
by an average car count of 31 racecars per event this season along
with 10 drivers having attended all 16 events with many more near-full
time participants. Competition was intense with 11 different winners
on the tour as well and a hard fought point's race among many of
the state's finest Super Late Model chauffeurs.
