2012 COLUMBUS SPEEDWAY RULES AND PROCEDURES

DISCLAIMER

The rules and or regulations set forth herein are designed to provide for the orderly conduct of racing events, to establish minimum acceptable requirements for such events. These rules shall govern the condition of all events, and by participating in these events. No express or implied warranty of safety shall result from publication of or compliance with these rules or regulations. They are intended as a guide for the conduct of the sport and are in no way a guarantee against injury or death to a participant, spectator, or official. The word "track" shall mean Columbus Speedway.

***TECH BULLETIN: All drivers must be wearing complete fire-resistant suits at or they will not race. If a driver is caught without a firesuit in the tech line or during race conditions, they will not get to race and will not get paid.

GENERAL TRACK RULES  

  • Track officials will act upon any situation not covered by the rule book and their decisions shall be final.
  • The track management reserves the rights to change, update, modify, add, or delete any rules without prior notification with regards to providing fairness of competition.
  • All drivers, car owners, mechanics, or anyone else must sign a release and purchase an armband before entering the pit area. This armband must be worn on your wrist at all times. Offenders will be dismissed from the pit area by security.
  • Track officials reserve the right to forbid any individual(s) from Columbus Speedway property.
  • No driver or crew member shall subject any track official to abuse, ridicule, or foul language at anytime; on or off the track.
  • No drugs or firearms are allowed in the pit area or track properties. Offenders will be ejected from the premises immediately.
  • The driver is held responsible for the conduct of his pit crew members. The driver will be the sole spokesperson on all matters concerning the race and must talk to the officials in charge.
  • Officials reserve the right to move a driver from one class to another, based on the type of car, and/or his driving performance.
  • Mandatory Driver’s Meetings attendance required.All drivers must pack the track.
  • Drivers can compete in more than one class per race event with Race Director’s approval.
  • Drivers may change cars at any time between qualifying/heats/B-Main and the start of the Main Event at the discretion of the Race Director. However, any change will result in the driver starting in the rear of his heat race, B-Main or Main Event. It is the driver’s responsibility to notify track officials of any desired change.
  • Officials may inspect all participating racecars at any time. Cars with minor rules variances may be granted permission to race by agreeing to make such changes by next race event. Weight will be added at Technical Inspector’s discretion to allow nonconforming cars to participate. No rules variance shall be granted for Championship events.
  • If any unnecessary roughness on the track causes the race to be stopped, the persons involved may be sent to the pits, sent to the rear of the race field, or disqualified.
  • No nitrous oxide in any class.
  • To insure proper scoring, all car numbers must be 24 inches in height and 3 inches in width. All cars should be clearly numbered on each side and on the top (top number position should be read from the right passenger side of the car.)
  • Track officials reserve the right to change any car number to avoid duplication.
  • Only drivers can sign for/collect nightly winnings.
  • No payment will be made until the Race Director approves the finishing order.
  • Toe hook/chain is mandatory for the front and rear of all cars. This will speed up the tow time, in order for the wrecker to get the track cleared and resume the race. There will be a one-week grace period.
  • ANY DRIVER AT ANY TIME DETERMINED TO HAVE SOFTENED OR CHEMICALLY ALTERED TIRES WILL BE DISQUALIFIED FROM THE REMAINDER OF THE EVENT.  DRIVER AND/OR CAR OWNER MAY BE FINED UP TO $500 PER TIRE, AND COULD BE SUSPENDED, AT RACE DIRECTOR DISCRETION.  DRIVER AND/OR OWNER WILL NOTIFIED IN WRITING OF DECISION, ALL DECISION’S ARE FINAL.
  • We will use a sniffer to determine if the tire has been chemically altered.  If the sniffer deem the tire or tires are illegal you will be disqualified from that event, losing all winnings and points.  WE WILL GO BY THE SNIFFER. 

SAFETY

  • Cars entering and exiting the pits must travel at a slow, safe rate of speed.
  • All drivers must wear a certified full-coverage crash helmet.
  • Complete fire-resistant suits are highly recommended for all drivers.
  • It is recommended that all entrants have a fully charged fire extinguisher in their cars at all times.
  • All weights must be securely mounted inside or on the frame of the car.
  • All cars must have a safety loop on the drive shaft at front.
  • A safety net on the window is recommended, and three (3) bars in the front of the steering wheel are recommended. All safety nets must have a top quick release.
  • Roll cage required.
  • Safety racing belt and shoulder harness ismandatory on all cars.
  • Gas tanks or fuel cells may be relocated for safety in all classes. Fuel cells are recommended in all classes.
  • No one but track officials and emergency crew is allowed on the track during yellow or red flag periods. This is for your safety only. Only authorized personnel are allowed on the track or in the infield.

RACE PROCEDURES

  • It will be the driver’s responsibility to be lined up prior to the start of the race in the staging area. If the car is not on the track after one (1) pace lap, it will start at the rear of the line-up. Line-ups will be posted at specified areas in the pits.
  • Courtesy laps may be allowed based on Race Director’s discretion.
  • Any driver that stops his car on the track to argue or otherwise delay or disrupt the race maybe disqualified and fined.
  • Cars in all classes that start the races on the front row will have two (2) chances for a green flag start. After two (2) false starts, both cars may be moved back one row. Exceptions may be used if cars in the field are out of position or if any unsafe conditions exist on the track. (1) One chance rule may be invoked.
  • Any Driver who comes to a stop during the first lap, and in the opinion of the Officials, has done so deliberately to cause a re-start, will be put to the rear before the race is re-started. Any driver who spins out unassisted on the initial start will be put to the rear before the race is restarted.
  • In the event of either a Caution or a Red Flag, after one (1) lap has been scored, any car that goes into the Pits will rejoin the Field at the rear. In the event of a Caution or a Red Flag on the starting lap, Drivers may enter the pits for repair, and assume their original grid positions, provided that they have regained the Track before the one to go signal has been given. In all cases, either starts or restarts, if the one lap to go signal has been given, those rejoining after the signal must join the Field at the rear.
  • Field line up will revert to last completed and scored lap order after a red or yellow flag.
  • Lapped cars will placed at the tail end of the line up.
  • Any car, which causes a caution flag two (2) times in any race (heat or feature), will be warned with a black flag. The driver will be disqualified from the race after causing three (3) cautions. A two (2) caution disqualification rule may be invoked for special events, at Race Director’s discretion. Race Director may invoke one (1) caution rule anytime deemed necessary.
  • Race Director reserves the right to conclude a race at any time. Race Director has the right to invoke time limits for all events at any time. Race Director reserves the right to shorten or lengthen number of laps scheduled for heat and/or feature events at any time.
  • Any driver who does not obey the flag rules may be disqualified.
  • Drawing determines you’re starting position for the heat race or feature event. How you finish the heat race, determines your start position for the feature race. Track reserves right to have drawing for field inversion. Track has authority to handicap previous week’s winner’s starting position in feature event. Drivers that win 2 features in a row or more may be required to start at the rear of the last heat for the driver’s respective class, the following event.
  • Championship races: Track may change regular format (qualifications and number of laps) for Championship races. Track may awards double points for Championship events.
  • No work allowed on cars by unauthorized individuals on track during a caution flag.
  • No work will be done on cars during red flags. During a yellow flag caution, a car may stop at The Body Shop for track officials to check car damage. If help is needed, the track workers will render that help. No one is allowed beyond the fence at turn #3 or turn #4. If ANY team helper/ crew chief, etc. is caught beyond this point, the driver of the car is responsible and may be disqualified.
  • On single file restart, the lead car fires at cone -no passing before the cone. Drivers passing before the cone may be disqualified, placed one lap down, or placed to the end of the field based on Race Directors discretion. The flagman starts the race at the cone on double file starts. Race Director reserves the right to use double file restarts at any time, for any class.
  • Slower cars given the “move over” flag must move out of the preferred racing groove or hold line.
  • Top three (3) cars must weigh immediately after heat and/or feature event. Exceptions will be stated for special events. 10 pound scale variance allowed.

PROTEST RULES 

  • NO equipment will be considered approved by reason of having passed through inspection unobserved.
  • If at any time there is a doubt about a part being legal for competition. YOU must prove to officials that the protested part is legal.
  • Technical protests will be made after the feature event only. Only a participant in the said race may file a technical protest. All protests must be filed immediately after the event finish. Protest must be filed in the infield and required cash for protest presented before car leaves and to goes to pit area. Once car goes leaves perimeter of track, they are ineligible to file protest. Protest must be made in writing with SPECIFIC protest issues described. Inspection shall begin within 30 minutes after the protest has been filed, or the protested car/participant will be disqualified. Failure or refusal to tear down will result in immediate disqualification and forfeiture of all prize money, awards, and points for that event.
  • Only cars that finish on the lead lap and in the top 5 are allowed to protest. No spite protests. Drivers may only protest cars that finish in FRONT of them. No reverse protests allowed.
  • Drivers are allowed one (1) attempted and/or executed technical protest per year.
  • Any visual protest must be made before qualifying or heat races. Visual protest must be made in writing with SPECIFIC protest issues described. Any visual protest is $25 cash on EACH item that is a visual protest.
  • Each separate technical protest must be accompanied by a $250 cash protest fee for the top of the engine (heads, carburetor, bore and stroke, etc.) and/or a $250 cash fee for the bottom of the engine (rods, crankshaft, etc.) $500 cash protest fee for complete tear down. To P and G (check cubic inches), protest fee is $100 cash. All technical protests accompanied by $250.00 cash with disbursement of $200.00 to the protest winner and $50 to the track. All technical protests accompanied by $500 cash with disbursement of $400 to the protest winner and $100 to the track. Track retainage of the protest fee will go to the speedway, regardless of the protest outcome. The only individuals allowed examining engine or parts protested are the driver being protested and an assistant, the driver protesting and an assistant, and the Technical Inspector. The Technical Inspector’s decision is final.
  • Track officials reserve the right to tech, spot check, or examine cars at any time.
  • Track officials reserve the right to accept or not accept protests at their discretion.
  • Scoring protest, made by driver only, must be made 10 minutes of official posting after your final event of the evening. There will be no protest of scoring after the 10 minute time period. The finish sheet will be official.

    FUEL SYSTEM: This applies to (Engine option A) ONLY Any stock carburetor or 600 CFM maximum vacuum secondary. Holley may be used. Gas only. No electric or belt drive fuel pumps are allowed. A 1" maximum adapter or spacer may be used. OPTION: Cars may run a stock 500 CFM Holley 2-barrel carburetor. Must pass “go, no go” test. Cars with this option DO NOT have to pull vacuum.     SUSPENSION AND FRAME: Suspension must be stock front and rear. The frame must be stock front and rear. The frame must be stock from bumper to bumper. No tubular A-arms or trailing arms may be used. Stock spindles and brakes only. No coil over shocks or simulated coil over shocks allowed. Springs may be shimmed. Springs must be 5" in diameter, minimum. Stock steering only. You may make the steering shaft from box to steering wheel. No bars outside of body.

    TRANSMISSION AND REAR END: Stock automatic or manual transmission only. No racing transmission or quick change rear end allowed. Automatic transmissions must have torque converter. Manual transmissions must have a working clutch. Rear end may be locked. No wide five hubs allowed. Bert or Brinn OKAY add 100 lbs of weight.

    WEIGHT: Minimum weight with the driver anytime. Using (Engine option A) 3,000 lbs. (Engine option B) 3,000 pounds. (Engine option C) 9 pounds per cubic inch. If using a Bert or Brinn transmission add 100 lbs. weight.

 

MINI STOCK

  1. Body – Any two or four door domestic or foreign car with a 90”-105” wheel base.  No front wheel drive or all wheel drive vehicles.  Stock roof: may run sheet metal stock-appearing body.  After market nose piece and tail piece allowed.  Stock fire wall in stock location.  Full floor pan.  8 inch spoiler
  2. Roll Cage – Full four point roll cage is required.  All cages must meek track official approval.

  3. Suspension – No tube chassis or jig frames.  Damaged sections of the chassis may be replaced with tubing in stock location.  Caster and Camber plates allowed.  Screw jacks allowed.  Changes in pinion allowed.  All suspension components, springs, shocks, sway bars mounted in stock location.  Racing springs and shocks allowed.  One shock per wheel.  No spring around shocks unless from factory.
  4. Weight – Two thousand pound minimum.  Car must weigh one pound per CC.  Engine displacement must be clearly posted on the hood.  All weight must be attached with at lease ½” bolt and be painted white with the proper car number on it.

  5. Tires and Wheels – Any 10” wheel.  Steel wheels only.  Bead locks allowed.
  6. Brakes – Any stock-type brakes.  Three wheel brakes allowed.

  7. Rear End – Any stock-type rear end.  No quick change rear end

  8. Drive Line – Any stock-type transmission with working reverse.  Driveshaft must be metal and painted white with a hoot.  Any clutch or fly wheel; no couplers.
  9. Engine – Any stock four cylinder engine in stock location.  No after-market or racing blocks.  No turbos.  No dry sump.  Any flat top piston; Toyota 3tc may have a dome.  Any steel rod.  Stock crank shaft with stock stroke 2inch pin minimum.  Any type ignition.  Headers allowed.  2550 max CC.

  10. Head – Stock head (no after-market); OEM head must have come off of a mass production vehicle; no aluminum heads on a Ford 2000 or 2300 based engine.  Two valves per cylinder.  No dual camshafts.  Roller cam – add 100 pounds.  After market intake – add 25 pounds.  Port and polish allowed.

  11. Fuel – Any two barrel carburetor – 500 max..  No alcohol; racing gas allowed.  Electric fuel pump must have a safety shut off.  Fuel cell required.

  12. Protest Procedure on Engine - $300 Top end of engine; $300 Bottom end of engine; $25 visual

ANY RULE NOT COVERED IN THIS BOOK OR RULES INTERPRETATION WILL BE DECIDED BY TECHNICAL INSPECTOR. TECHNICAL INSPECTOR’S DECISION WILL BE FINAL.

PURE STOCK RULES

The Statement: Unless it came on a stock, mass produced vehicle, it is NOT LEGAL UNLESS SPECIFIED HERE! If it came on a stock, mass produced vehicle and it is prohibited here, it is NOT LEGAL! All dimensions are referenced as the car is raced. Your tire pressures, spring settings, ect. May put your car out of limits. No variances are allowed when / if the cars are checked / weighed going onto the track. Following the race, decisions on variances for accident is at the discretion of the Tech Inspector(s).

RELATIONSHIP TO OTHER CLASSES:These cars are primarily for NEWER drivers to V8 cars. There are a large number of stock parts.

ELIGIBLE MAKES/MODELS:Any Chrysler, Ford or GM model car that was / is mass-produced for the United States Market. Check with track before you build.

MATERIALS: No ceramic or carbon fiber parts allowed.

RADIATOR:One, mounted in front of the engine for the purpose of cooling water and, optionally, to cool an automatic transmission.

ENGINE:
Location: Stock location for Make / Model / Year.Option 1 Properly Sealed GM 602 Crate Motor in any make car.(Must run 500cfm Holley 2 barrel)

Option 2MAKE: Corporate engine must match the corporate frame, any year ok.LIFT: Must not exceed .450 lift as measured at the top of the valve.Block: Stock based, steel, small block not to exceed 362 ci. Must be stock bore (+60 ok) and stroke. NO strokers / hybrids (no383ci Chevys, No 347 Fords, ect.) All engine casting numbers stamped on the engine must be unaltered.CAM: Chain drivenLIFTERS: Solid or hydraulic. No rollers or mushrooms. No ceramic.PISTONS: Dished or Flat. No DomesRODS: OEM length. Example: SBC must be 5.7 inch I-Beam rods No 6 Inch rods. No H-Beam rods.HEADS: OEM iron heads. Vortec heads ok. OEM style stamped steel rockers. No roller rockers. No roller tipped rockers. Screw in studs and guide plates OK. No Porting/ Polishing.VALVES:Maximum of 2 valves per cylinder. Max intake is 1.94. Max exhaust is 1.50. CARBURETOR: One carb. 500 cfm two barrel Holley with stock, unaltered, throttle arm and butterflies. Choke plate may be removed. Choke housing must remain in place. Power valve may be removed/blocked off. The accelerator pump squirter may not extend into the area directly above the venturi (Tech Purposes). Recommend Epoxing the boosters for safety.CARB CLAIM: Any car owner of a car in the FEATURE RACE may claim the carburetor of any car finishing ahead of the claimers car in the FEATURE RACE for $300 and swap of claimers carb. Only 2 Claims per year. (Tech Inspector(s) will have final say so if carb is in shape to swap).

INTAKE MANIFOLD:Any cast iron. No Porting / Polishing. OK to drill the intake to mount on Vortec heads.
CARB ADAPTER / SPACER:No more than 1 adapter and no more than 1 spacer a combined total of 1 inch thick. May be Aluminum, Wooden or Plastic.

AIR FILTER HOUSING: No vacuum lines allowed between the air cleaner and the carburetor. Only one, round, mass produced air cleaner may be used. Maximum size of the element will be 14in in diameter by 4 inches tall. Air cleaner top and bottom must be made of solid metal. NO PLASTIC AIR HATS.

IGNITION:Battery operated. OEM electronic ignition system such as HEI required. Distributor must be mounted in the stock location and maintain the stock firing order. No crank / triggered ignition. No ignition boxes.

ALTERNATOR:If used, must be 12 volt and of OEM design.

HARMONIC BALANCER:After market to include fluid damper ok.

NUMBER ONE PLUG:Must be at stock location for make and model.
STARTER: Full size after market ok.
WATER PUMP: After market ok.
POWER STEERING PUMP: Stock for make/model. : After market power steering pumps and steering quickeners are ok for 2011.
ACCESSORIES:Other items must be OEM style but may be after market items.
PROHIBITED: Any titanium or other similar sophisticated lightweight parts. Mounting the engine so that the centerline of the crankshaft is more than 1in from the center point between the 2 top ball joints.
FUEL: Racing gasoline OK. No after market additives. No cool cans. See the safety rules on the required fuel cell.
EXHAUST: Must exit approximately parallel to the ground and not be aimed in the direction of the cockpit. Any cast iron manifold. Headers OK with 1 5/8 in primaries and 3 in collectors. No over the frame or crossover headers. Each side must include 36 in of 2 in pipe.
FLYWHEEL/FLEXPLATE: OEM steel only. OEM dimensions
CLUTCH/TRANSMISSION: Single disc clutch only 10 ½ in minimum. No aluminum flywheel. Stock type flywheel to weigh no less than 14lbs., stock type pressure plate no less than 13lbs., stock disc type clutch and flywheel required. Stock torque converter 13in required with automatic transmission. Transmission may have shift kit installed, 1/4in steel plate surrounding stock bell housing or blow proof bell housing required. No racing clutches are light flywheels, or small torque converters, or racing torque converters are allowed. Functioning torque converters must weigh 38lbs minimum.
DRIVE SHAFT:OEM steel. Universal joints are to be similar in design to OEM units. Minimum drive shaft diameter is 3 inches.
REAR END:Ford 9” OK in any make. When using 9” Ford make sure brackets are in stock location. OEM 5 or 6 lugs OK after strongly considering installing C-Clip eliminators or other provisions such as that breaking a rear axel dose not cause the axel to come out of the housing.
BRAKES: Minimum of 2 rear and 1 front brake. No floating brakes.
BATTERY:May use 2 batteries. If battery is located in drivers compartment it must be in an enclosed battery box and securely fastened. No bungee cords or ratchet straps. NO EXCEPTIONS. Must power the starter and the ignition and any accessories.
CHASSIS: OEM for Make / model / Year of the body.
WHEEL BASE:Must be as manufactured for the Make / Model / Year. Minimum Wheel Base 101”. A one-inch tolerance may be allowed at the direction of the Technical Inspector for accident damage the day of race.
STEERING:OEM style for Make / Model. No Rack and pinions unless OEM Equipped. No steering quickners.
FRONT SUSPENSION:OEM.Right, upper A-arm and all steering linkage may be reinforced as long as their identity remain clear. OEM style and dimensions racing shocks allowed. Shocks MUST use the OEM mounts and remain in their OEM location. NO SCREW JACKS. OEM style and dimension racing springs allowed. Springs must remain in their stock mounts and locations. For coil spring cars you may use 5-inch springs. Chrysler torsion bar suspension is permitted if it was stock on the year and model designated for the car. No driver adjustable suspension devices permitted.

REAR SUSPENSION:OEM. Shocks must use the OEM mounts and remain in their OEM location. NO SCREW JACKS. OEM style and dimension racing springs allowed. Springs must remain in their stock mounts and location. For coil spring cars you may use 5-inch springs. Chrysler torsion bar suspension is permitted if it was stock on the year and model designated for the car. OEM design leaf spring setups in which the springs are securely fastened to the rear end are OK. No driver adjustable suspension devices permitted. No “Z” links, aftermarket panhard bars, aftermarket J-bars, torque links, torque arms, damper shocks, fifth coils, ECT.

TRACTION CONTROL:Other than listed under REAR SUSPENSION, no other traction devices are permitted.
BODY:OEM production body, 1960 or newer. Complete stock body, unaltered except as stated here. Hoods may be gutted. Firewall must be completely stock and in the stock location. No open holes in firewall (seal Penetrations). Maintain the stock floor from firewall rearward to the leading edge of the trunk. There must be a firewall between the driver’s compartment and the trunk. NO decking allowed, must have open cockpit from firewall to rear firewall. All doors must be welded and / or bolted shut. Exterior door sheet metal may be replaced with fabricated sheet metal panels. Doors may be gutted. Install 3 driver’s sidebars, with 1/8” steel plate covering the door bars from front to back and top to bottom welded in place on outside of bars (Strongly Recommended). Install a minimum of 2 right side bars. The frame rails do not count as the door bars. See the safety rules for other items. Front inner panels optional on shock cars, required on strut cars. Trunk lid may be gutted. All glass must be removed. No mirrors. Grill may be replaced with wire mesh. Must have stock bodylines. Must have a metal firewall between driver and fuel cell. No fuel line in drivers compartment unless contained in conduit / pipe. Stop sign post material allowed between front and rear fenders on side of body to protect sheet metal and paint jobs. Fenders may be cut for tire clearance. Front fender well may be removed. Rear fender wells must be sealed, homemade OK. The rear of the car must be closed in.

NOSE / GRILL:Aftermarket plastic nose for Make / Model OK. Front grill may be removed if such nose is installed.

FRONT BUMPER:OEM for Make / Model OK. Fabricated Late Model type front bumpers may be used if professionally built and properly installed. No sharp edges. Ends must be modified with tubing to produce a backward bend. Maximum bumper width is 60 inches. May not extend more than 3 inches outward from the attachment point of the last support / brace that attaches at a 45 to 90 degree angle. 1 upper and 1 lower bar of no more than 1 inch tubing no more than 60 inches wide may be added to the bumper to support the nosepiece. These bars may be no wider than the bumper and must have ends that curve backward and may curve upward or downward towards the bumper. Bumper ends must be smooth and rounded and stay within the bodylines. All bumper material mounts; braces and hardware must be steel and / or aluminum.

Hood:May have an opening for the air cleaner. The claimed engine size must be displayed on each side of the hood reading from the closet side of the car. Use letters at least 3 inches tall with the length proportional to the height.

ROOF:Stock appearing. No spoilers or wings. The left and right edges of the roof are to be approximately the same height from the top of the doors and quarter panels. No more than 1 inch tolerance. The left and right side support panels for the roof must be the same design and front to back length.

INTERIOR: See the section on SAFETY.No part of the seat may extend rearward past the plane generated by connecting the rear most edges of the doors. Aftermarket GAS pedal OK. (May be relocated) Stock brake and clutch pedals in stock location. Must retain OEM window openings.

TRUNK LID:Required. May be gutted. Must be able to be opened.

REAR BUMPER:Any Make / Model OEM OK. Fabricated OK if approved by Tech. Ends must be smooth. Must be attached to the frame or roll cage in at least 4 places, 2 on each side of centerline.
SPOILERS: Not allowed, PERIOD. ( If your car came with one take it OFF).

WHEELS:15X8 Steel wheels only. No wide fives. Must mount with at least 5 lug nut design. Mud caps OK. No Bead Locks.

TIRES:IMCA G-60 or 60 series D.O.T., AR KK704 OK ....No mud grips.

WEIGHT: All cars must weight 3400 pounds with driver on board.
