Columbus, MS - The prestigious 15th Annual NAPA Auto Parts James King Memorial was finaly made up Saturday night following an early-season rainout. The Southern Regional Racing Series as well as top regional Super Late Model talent would be on hand for the 64-lap, $5,000-to-win event held as always at the Baddest Bullring in the South.
Chris Wall and Rick Rickman would share the front row for the start of the James King Memorial main event. Eric Hickerson, Anthony Rushing, and Jerry Inmon would take B-Main wins in Super Late Model preliminary action.
Rickman would rocket into the lead at the start of the feature race, beating Wall off the line with Jimbo McDuffie in tow. McDuffie would hold off Wall, Billy Moyer, and Byron Michael in the first turn, then shake off Wall to remain in the runner-up spot as Moyer moved in to unsuccessfully challenge Wall before the first caution fell on lap 3 for Bub McCool.
Rickman would restart the race ahead of McDuffie, Wall, Moyer, Michael, and Dane Dacus, fending off a deep-dive from Wall on the restart before wall fell back to third behind McDuffie. Moyer would begin to hound Wall as the drivers blasted primarily around the rim of the track in "old-school" Columbus fashion. Rickman, clearly dominant particularly early on in the #1 Jay Dickens Racing Engines House Car, would quickly stretch out to a lead over McDuffie, who also built a cushion over Wall.
Rickman reached lap traffic by lap 13 with nearly a straightaway lead, still pulling away as McDuffie battled Wall then pulled away once again before a lap 22 caution for Jerry Inmon. Moyer would then retire from the race, his machine being pushed off the track under caution as the field realigned with Rickman leading McDuffie, Wall, Michael, and Tony Knowles. A third caution fell the following lap with no change in the top five.
Wall would get a good look at first place on the restart but Rickman once again motored away on the back stretch with McDuffie putting the #71 back to third. Knowles would make a quick bid for third place, then fall back leaving McDuffie, Wall, and Michael to trail Rickman, who beagan his second trip through lapped traffic on lap 32. Dane Dacus would bring out a caution on lap 37, with action resuming in the much the same manner until Anthony Rushing broke into the top five on lap 42.
McDuffie survived a serious challenge by Wall on lap 44, then chased down the runaway Rickman before breaking and bringing out caution on lap 48 ending a strong run. After a false start, Rickman led Wall, Michael, Knowles, and the charging David Breazeale to the last green flag of the night.
Rickman, Wall, and Michael would stay in close order ahead of Knowles, with Wall looking beneath Rickman each lap. Rickman would survive passing attempts on lap 53, 57, 58, and 60, then built a small, short-lived cushion until Wall pulled back close to the leader on lap 63 just before the white flag waved.
Once again, drama unfolded at The Bullring when Wall drove hard into turns 1 and 2 under Rickman in a last-ditch effort gone horribly wrong. The #71 machine drove into the left side of the #1 and both cars spun in turn 2 with third-place Byron Michael capitalizing, going on to take the win. Breazeale would pass Knowles in turn 4 to take what became second place, and Rickman amazingly rebounded to limp across the finish line in 4th (Wall did not complete the lap).
Fifth place went to Tony Morris, with Mike Boland, Inmon, Dean Carpenter, Hickerson, and Billy Mayo completing the top ten.
Blake Koenigsberger would take the Mini Stock win over Matt Price and Jeremy Shaw. Mark Stokes would beat Chris Reed and Jamie Pickard to the line in Stormapay.com Crate Late Model action, while Eric Cooley took Late Model Stock honors over Jeremy Glasgow and Ray Paul. Dusty Robertson took the Street Stock win, and Mike Minor took the Mini Stock checkered flag.
Action returns to Columbus Speedway on September 14-15 with the Stormpay Late Model National Series in action as well as other local divisions. Visit www.ColumbusSpeedway.net for details.
