Columbus, MS - The Six Crown Southern Speedweek presented by Brown Engineering had its first Mississippi stop of the weekend with race 3 on Saturday night at Columbus Speedway. 30 Super Late Model entries joined a total 112 race teams for the event which also featured a full Summer Racing Series program.
Rick Rickman would set the mark in qualifying for the Six Crown Super Late Models, lapping the highbanks at 13.93 seconds. Rickman would share the feature front row with Ronny Lee Hollingsworth, ahead of old rivals Eddie Rickman Johnny Stokes - in the Jay Dickens Racing Engines house car for the weekend - on the second row. Three B-Main events were won by Scott Dedwylder, Greg Fore, and Jim McDuffie.
The full moon seemed to be in effect as spectacular, hard-to-follow racing that sometimes reached 5-wide status clashed with a penchant for cautions in the first half of the event. Hollinsgworth, the Rickmans, Stokes, Dane Dacus, Bub McCool, and others all found themselves in contention early, but on-track events would lead to Eddie Rickman being relegated to the rear of the field after an early caution and Stokes later leaving the track and the race after suffering a flat tire. 5th-starting Dacus would work his way through it all into the lead on about lap 6 as the field shuffled madly behind him on the smooth, extremely competitive track.
With the cautionfest effectively over just before the halfway point, Dacus was able to assert himself as the man to beat and went on to take an impressive win with Bub McCool earning second place. Mike Boland, who started back in 15th, marched his way up to a third place finish. Behind the top three, intense, normally 3-wide and several rows deep action shook down with Hollingsworth leading the pack across the line to take third over 19th-starting Anthony Rushing. Chris Ragan, last week's winner Jason Sanderford, Dean Carpenter, Jim McDuffie, and Brian Rickman completed the top ten.
Dacus' win made him the 10th different Super Late Model feature winner at Columbus Speedway this season in 10 events. The streak could easily continue as the division enjoys a particularly high level of parity and competition so far in 2007, with several drivers yet to win threatening each week.
The Open Wheel Modified event was also a barn-burning affair, with even stiffer competition up front in the latter stages of the event. Brian Rickman would rocket to the front riding against teh wall to take the checkers by half a car length over Brandon Poppenheimer, followed by Lee Ray, Jeremy Shaw, and Jay Burchfield. Jamie Pickard would return to victory lane in the Stormpay.com Crate Late Model division over Jeremy Shaw, who started last after taking over the Reed Long entry for the feature. Mike Ellis, Carson Wallace, and Greg Allen rounded out the top five.
Ray Mauldin took the Late Model Stock win over Marcus Minga and Ricky Rawson. Marvin Beard continued his win streak after a heated battle with Mike Barton and extended his bounty (he was unable to start the feature last week) by collecting the Street Stock win over Trey Bright and Barton. The Minor clan monopolized the podium in the Mini Stock division as Mike Minor, Bo Minor, and Heath Minor took the top three spots in the main event.
Columbus Speedway will continue the 2007 Summer Racing Series next Saturday night July 7th with a Full Racing Program. The show includes the Rebel Challenge Weekly Racing Series Super Late Models paying at least $1,000 to win and $125 to start and all local divisions in action. Local divisions include Late Model Stock, Open Wheel Modifieds, Stormpay Late Models, Street Stocks, and Mini Stocks.
The bounty on Marvin Beard goes up to $150 this week in the Street Stock division.
The event will serve as a good time to test and tune for the upcoming Cliburn Tank Lines Lucas Oil Series James Nickoles Memorial presented by the Columbus Convention and Visitors Bureau SPEED TV event coming up July 14th.
Grandstand gates open at 5pm with hot laps at 7:30pm and racing at 8:00pm.
